Extra cooling on FW Desktop

Added 2 extra USB-powered coolers to my FW Desktop.

Initially, I had just the small 60x15mm one to help the constantly overheating PSU. And later saw the top part perfectly fits a 70x25mm cooler, so added that one too.

Glued some magnetic tape to the sides of the coolers, and they snap into place perfectly. It’s not the prettiest, but it works well and is easy to take off and clean.

I also have the front 80mm cooler installed, and since then, the temps have been a bit lower, especially on the main SSD.

I’m also thinking of attaching a heatsink on top of the PSU to help lower the temps on it even more. I’m not using the PCIe slot, so there is enough space for it.

I think I will go with an 80x40mm like this one https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c42OHNpx

But a bit bigger one might also fit, like 100x60mm.

Has anyone done this already?

But why?

As I explained in my main post, I put the external fan for the PSU as it was always overheating. I had system shutdowns and reboots several times. The PSU was so hot you couldn’t put your finger on it. Since I put the fan on, it’s been running well.

I dont know if you are in a very hot environment, but if you need additional cooling for the PSU, something is wrong. Does your PSU Fan work? is it by chance dirty?

I’m not considering being in a very hot environment, although in the summer it gets up to 30C even in the house.

Last year, when I got my FW Desktop, I thought the fan was not running at all FW Desktop PSU Fan not running at all? Later, I started hearing it, but very briefly. So still not sure if or how it’s running, and if it’s working well. But funny thing, I think I started hearing it because it started to get dirty, aka accumulate some dust, since I got it last autumn.

But from what I’ve seen from others both here and on Reddit, the PSU runs pretty hot as it’s so small and packed.

I also added the heatsink on the top of the PSU as others did Noisy PSU fan - #607 by k_peter_06

And a heatsink at the bottom, this 3D print project here Desktop PSU noise fix - #7 by k_peter_06

With these heatsinks, together with the front 80mm front fan and my 2 USB fans, I think I achieved peak FW Desktop cooling lol.

Have you looked at this? Overtek custom replacement PSU. I got the initial one based on measurements I took from the woefully inadequate PSU Framework chose to supply. This is a drop in replacement, has a fan on the rear and has 500W on tap (original is 400W). This is all but silent and doesn’t overheat. The Noctua fan installed in it is set to run constantly at 15% duty. I have a thread on it if you want to look: https://community.frame.work/t/custom-enhance-enp-7660b-psu-fitted-in-my-desktop/82036/17
