I’m having an issue when connected to an external display. When connected to an external display, the fan noise is much higher. I’ve got the lid closed. Curious how to debug this, it sometimes seems to peg my system in ways that never happen when I’m using the laptop’s display and not the external one.

When this is happening, can you check which process is occupying the processor? That could give a hint to what’s going on!

Don’t run this laptop with the lid closed. Just have a look at the under hinge ventilation. In general my opinion is that laptops have worse thermal performance with their lid closed.

Can confirm what @parawizard said.
FW13 is not designed to run with the lid closed, due to ventilation.
To confirm this for yourself, please just search the forum - there are multiple posts about this topic already.

Been trying to find it, it doesn’t seem to be one process occupying most of the CPU usage.

Right now I’ve got chrome running about 6 tabs and the fan is a bit noisier than usual. the system monitor is using the most CPU of anything at about 6-7%

Ah, bummer. I wonder if it’ll work if I turn it upside down!

Just watch the vent area when you open and close the laptop and you’ll see why. In general I think laptops cool worse when closed. Most will be pulling at least some air in through the keyboard and radiating heat from the top deck. You could get a laptop stand arm and use it as a second accessory screen for example.
