I am having some very strange issues with my new framework 13 AMD 7840U, 96GB RAM and Windows 11 24H2 (Build 26100.2605). BIOS is updated is 3.05
After a fresh install of Windows, all windows updates, and a reboot but before installing the framework driver pack, everything is working fine. I can connect to an external monitor through a USB-C hub, sound over HMDI works, Windows itself is responsive.
I noticed the GPU was disabled in device manager (not sure what did that) so I re-enabled and upon reboot explorer won’t even load. I tried the latest AMD drivers from the AMD website and with the GPU disabled, all the issue above disappear but I cannot use an external monitor anymore. With the GPU enabled the system boot loops.
I have tried reinstalling windows, running a stress test on the CPU, setting the GPU to gaming mode in BIOS but no difference.
How does it behave if it is not connected to the monitor? Try booting unplugged from everything and see if it works. If so it may be the dreaded AMD Audio Coprocessor problem. [SOLVED] USB Audio problems with Framework 16
Definitely part of my problem, that nearly fixes everything. Thank you for the link!
“Just” the GPU left. If I enable it in task manager and reboot (with nothing plugged in) I can see the windows bootscreen, I can then hear the startup sound but it’s just a black screen instead of the login page. If I reboot again something disables the GPU.
Fingers crossed for another link to magically fix the issue…
No link needed. With that fix, I reinstalled the framework driver pack with nothing plugged in and it all magically started working after a reboot. Thank you!
If you ever find your Windows audio appears to have died leaving you with no sound, the first thing to do it check that the default audio output device hasn’t been set to some incorrect device that results in you not hearing any audio.
Unfortunately with the original issue I could even get the settings page where you check the default audio device.
Interestingly, after manually clicking check for windows updates an optional one appeared AMD -Compute Accelerator - 32.0.203.240. After installing that I could enable the Audio Coprocessor and everything still worked.
This failure makes the panel for the sound pop-up when you click the notification area, but not populate. It also never goes away. This error makes the computer very broken until hard reboot. I am happy I found it before my grad school classes started up again.
