Hey! I’m thinking about getting a Framework Laptop 13. If I buy it with 16GB of RAM, does it come as 2x8GB or can I get 1x16GB? I’d like to upgrade to 32GB later on.

AMD should come in a dual channel configuration when ordering from Framework (2x8).
If you buy DIY and supply your own RAM then you can do whatever you want but single 16gb SODIMM would operate in single channel mode and performance will take a hit (how much? it depends on the workload and not a lot of test data because its not a normal configuration.)
Intel is LPCAMM2 which is a single dual channel module and upgrading requires replacing that outright so no incremental upgrades.

True, but it does make upgrading easier. In the second-hand forum here we recently had a 48GB machine with a single stick of that amount. That’s unusual, but if the new owner buys a similar stick, the memory should drop into dual-channel mode, and all without having to buy a new pair.
I don’t disagree, I’d already said with a DIY build they could do what they want. I just wanted to be sure to qualify that there will be a hit to performance of some unknown variable amount depending on task/workload.
Gamers nexus tested the steam machine (different device/cpu/possibly OS), and the impact was as high as 20% in productivity but only ~3% in gaming which does kind of back Valves claims that the gaming impact is negligble.
But If i was expecting 100% and no one pointed it out I’d be miffed if I dropped a few grand :shrug:

The Intel version of the Pro only has one slot so you cannot add another RAM stick later on. The AMD version has two slot but it’s highly recommend to use dual channel i.e. 2X8 is way better than 1X16 you’ll get up to 40% of framerates boost in some games. Unfortunately due to the rapidly changing form factor upgradable RAM is kind of devolved into a moot point.
