I’m considering buying a Framework 13 with the Ryzen AI 370. I would use it, among other things, for web development. My question is: considering the price, does the 890 iGPU allow for occasional gaming? I mainly play indie games, but also some AAA titles like Final Fantasy Rebirth, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Sea of Thieves. I don’t mind fan noise, but I’d like to know if the iGPU would let me enjoy those games
I’ve been tinkering with my ryzen ai 350 like a mad man on linux* and it’s been pretty great. It’s basically a steam deck with a bigger screen.
Biggest tips are:
If you have the 2.8k screen, run gamescope with an internal resultion of 1800x1200 instead because it’s retina from normal viewing distance anyway and it’ll double your framerate. The full 2.8k is only worth it when scaling shitty text-heavy x11 applications, not worth it for games.
New kernel is critical. 6.15 or newer.
New mesa is also very helpful, try to get 25.2 or newer. This is less critical than an up to date kernel though.
Plug it in and set power profile to performance (obviously).
Don’t expect to play new games on ultra settings. I normally go for medium first and then lower some and raise others as appropriate.
I’ve got cyberpunk 2077 running at ~60fps medium settings this way and it looks great.
*If you’re on windows, I’ve got no clue, sorry. Normally steamos-like setups with gamescope sessions perform a bit better on these AMD iGPUs than windows but it’s a toss up, you might need to search benchmarks specific to your favorite games.
