Framework 13 Ryzen AI 7 340 - MES ring buffer full / system freeze on Linux Mint 22.3

Hardware:

  • Framework Laptop 13 AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series

  • CPU: Ryzen AI 5 340

  • GPU: Radeon 840M

  • BIOS: 3.05

Software:

  • OS: Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon

  • Kernel: 6.17.0-22-generic

Software:

  • OS: Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon

  • Kernel: 6.17.0-22-generic

Problem: System freezes completely multiple times per day during normal use (browsing, messaging). Mouse becomes unresponsive, keyboard non-functional, TTY inaccessible. Requires hard power off.

Logs show:

amdgpu: MES failed to respond to msg=MISC (WAIT_REG_MEM)
amdgpu: MES ring buffer is full.
i2c_designware AMDI0010:03: controller timed out

Attempted fixes — none resolved the issue:

  • amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x12

  • amdgpu.psr=0

  • amdgpu.mes=0 — parameter appears to have no effect, MES ring buffer errors persist

Notes:

Hi, I’m also on Linux Mint, same laptop, same problem. According to the link you posted, a fix was found and the kernel 6.18 and 6.19 have been fixed. However, LM only proposes 6.17.0-23 at the time of writing, so not sure if we’ll need to install manually the newer kernel, or if it’ll be backported too.

Hi!
I switched to Ubuntu 25.10 and its more stable… i still get it every couuple of days with kernel .23 but at least its more or less usable now. Im planning to upgrade to ubuntu 26.04 in some weeks when it gets more stable and hope then it will not happen anymore.
