I got the Framework 16 in December and I am facing performance issues with the Keyboard and mouse. Also the device is the noisiest thing I own right now. I only have discord and Edge running right now, and the fan is at full. Only 5 tabs on Edge. The mouse seems to get stuck - like just stuck and unresponsive. I tried to re-seat the touch pad and It improved, but it gets that way often. The keyboard also decides to stop accepting input half way through a sentence.
I did upgrade the Bios and windows etc, but no improvement yet. Anyone else seeing issues like this?
All from fan error to other things, i got AI 370 one myself but with expansion bay instead for now and i can say for me the laptop is 90% quiet, i have discord. brave browser and some times i have android studio or filezilla runing and it remains quiet. Only when i do long time of upload/download over filezilla will get fans to get partly louder but not as bad as i thought. That’s because cpu load is higher than it is otherwise.
It’s getting to be unusable - today I tried to get some work done and was opening around 8 tabs on edge and discord and the system just froze and the fan ran at full. Not sure if I messed up when I attached the keyboard or if I got a fake device. Reviews never said the laptop gets unusable. I don’t think I’ve owned such a slow device and I’m old enough to have used the 5 inch floppies
We need more information to be able to help you here. Have you monitored temperature and cpu usage? You mentioned the input components like the trackpad and keyboard occasionally stop registering, but reseating them helps. This could be multiple issues or maybe a single issue causing multiple problems.
I’d first fully disassemble down to the motherboard. Make sure everything is installed correctly, and there’s not components misaligned or misfit. The keyboard deck and trackpad should not bow or stick out/up when properly aligned, so if they’re losing contact, something may be not correctly fit. Check the heatsink fit on the motherboard too. It sounds like you’re having overheating and CPU throttling, but since you didn’t provide any monitoring data, nobody knows.
If the heatsink was improperly installed, then the CPU would overheat and fans would run constantly, but no cooling would be achieved. An improper heatsink install could also cause misalignment with the midplate, which would then potentially be bumping your keyboard and touchpad out of place, preventing proper contact with the pins. This is all just a theory based on the limited details you stated however. It could just as easily be out-dated/missing drivers, a broken windows install, etc. etc.
It’s true that I haven’t provided any data. I didn’t really assemble this - I got the prebuilt version - I just had to attach the keyboard and the ports. I already tried reseating the keyboard and the touch pad a few times. There are slight height gaps where the side plates meet the top grill, nothing else with the assembly.
I did one bios upgrade after getting the device and also did a windows upgrade last night. I didn’t see any improvement after either of them. It looks like the Nvidia GPU is the problem as one that picks up, the laptop becomes unusable.
I don’t have software for collecting data like temperature or cpu speed - because even stuff like the standard task manager can’t be launched. The system doesn’t even respond to the the age old ctrl+atl+del
Yeah, I would definitely recommend carefully watching all the FM assembly videos and checking that everything is assembled correctly and fits without issues.
If you have only browsers and discord open, the GPU shouldn’t even be in use, so the Nvidia GPU running doesn’t seem to explain your previous described symptoms?
Have you tried a usb-keyboard for the Ctrl-Alt-Del not working? Task manager not launching sounds like the windows install is very wrong, or the CPU has throttled down so far that response takes too long to register. But you mentioned the keyboard doesn’t always respond properly, so that could be another cause. At the very least, bringing up task manager and checking CPU clock speed and usage would be some info…
I’m not sure what you mean by side plates. Are those the spacer plates around the trackpad or the keyboard if centered? Those having small gaps seems somewhat common unfortunately, but if there are gaps in other plates, like the keyboard, I would still disassemble the whole laptop down to the motherboard and confirm that everything is installed properly.
About fake device, i doubt it. If it was sent from factory in taiwan and ordered through framework website. But if you bought it from a 2nd hand store or somewhere else, then it might be a risks the device is fake like a copied one or it’s been tampered so that it has issues.
