Framework 16 Batch 2 - Still the same issues as always

Ever since I’ve had my Framework 16 2nd batch I’ve always had the same issues and no matter what distro, kernel params or other settings that I’ve tried they have persisted. I’ve tried fedora, nixos and a few other distros and have the same issues across all of them.

The first one is both duplicate key presses and missing key presses of the keyboard. Which is very frustrating because it always takes me 4 or 5 times to enter the encryption key to unlock my machine. I’ve tried making sure there were no power settings affecting the keyboard, i’ve re-seated it multiple times, but nothing help.

The second is the visual artifacts when I’m using the built-in display with the green boxes that flash across the screen. I’ve also re-seated the GPU a few times, tried multiple different kernel params, nothing really helps.

This is very frustrating because the only way to use the machine reliably is with a Bluetooth keyboard and an external monitor.

If anyone has any suggestions I’d greatly appreciate it but I have tried a lot of them.

I have a FW16 and do not have problems with key presses like you.
I have seen symptoms like you describe if i enable power save feature for the keyboard.
I am guessing that there is some power save setting still set, that is causing your problems.
It might also be a bad connection to the keyboard. Try checking the cable between the mainboard, through the midplate.

Specifics about the power save setting.
Using “powertop” in Linux.

PowerTOP 2.15 Overview Idle stats Frequency stats Device stats Tunables WakeUp

   Bad           VM writeback timeout
   Bad NMI watchdog should be turned off
>> Bad Autosuspend for USB device Laptop 16 Keyboard Module - ISO [Framework]
   Bad Runtime PM for PCI Device Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] AMD IPU Device

You need to leave the Keyboard Module set to “Bad”. Setting it to “Good” causes key repeats, and missed keys.

Seconded regarding turning off power savings for the keyboard.

I have verified that there are no power savings turned on for the keyboard. I have also re-seated the keyboard, number bad and cable multiple times over the year.

Happens even when I type in the password to unlock my disk before the OS even loads so there probably wouldn’t really be any power management stuff running yet.

I have this udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-framework-keyboard.rules:

#Framework Laptop 16 - Keyboard

ACTION==“add”, SUBSYSTEM==“usb”, ATTR{idVendor}==“32ac”, ATTR{idProduct}==“0012”, ATTR{power/autosuspend}=“-1”, ATTR{power/control}=“on”, GOTO=“rules_end”

More background in this thread: [SOLVED] Keys stick and repeat after being released

I do not have any udev rules installed but for me power control is already enabled on the keyboard and macro pad so the USB auto-suspend is already disabled.

```
Device: /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-3.2
Vendor: 32ac
Product: 0013
Power Control: on
Device: /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-4.2
Vendor: 32ac
Product: 0012
Power Control: on
```

But this also happens even before the OS even boots so I do not think it is a power management issue.

I guess if you have not already done so I would open a ticket with Support.

I actually did that an hour or so ago. I thought maybe I’d ask for one of their deflection kits and see if that help anything and in the mean time i’ll try and research the graphics issue more.

Best of luck. I have no ideas re the gpu. Please let us know if you get it resolved, and if so, what the solution was.

Thanks,

I put an online support ticket in last week but did not get a response or automate acknowledge ment so I’mm going to emmail them today and see if they have any ideas.
