Framework 16 needs more rigid chassis

I find that the framework 16 has too much chassis flex to body weight ratio. This is noticeable in particular when doing a one handed pickup of the laptop, I can hear the laptop creak under its own weight. The laptop also seems to have gotten dented by another laptop in the same bag, which is not very good durability-wise.

I would really appreciate if the laptop had more rigidity similar to a macbook, even if the laptop ends up weighing a bit more. It feels like as-is, the laptop lid is not sufficiently stiff and will need replacement every 2-3 years due to accumulated flexing over time. I’m also not sure impact the bottom case flex has but I’ve had to replace mainboard once. I wonder if the bottom chassis flex puts some stress on the mainboard which might be related?

I have seen other manufacturers frames warp over time. I have a Asus one that is warped under the keyboard.
The Asus has a thicker, very rigid, display panel that keeps the display further from the keyboard when closed.
I would like the display to be thicker, because then, one could put extra electronics there.

I have some stuff on this thread I created. I even made some stuff to partially sovle this issue.

Yeah dont do that. If you have to, get your fingers (4 of them) as far in as possible, and use the thumb to “clip” onto it.

Well, at 2.1Kg without a GPU, its not light by any means. Adding another 500g for the sake of ridigity (e,g., a bolt-on steel frame).. eeh, I dont know.
I wonder if there are any compromises made because of modularity? The popular argument says such, but so far I cant find much evidence.

Also, comparing against a Thinkpad P16, yeah Framework’s worse by a bit. However compared to a Dell inspiron 3511, Framework’s noticeably better. However the Dell is plastic, and Framework’s aluminum. Though the bottom plate on the framework seem to be frighteningly thin. But still.

Why don’t we talk more about potential ideas for modification on my thread?

I find it odd how people say 2kg is “heavy” when that isn’t even 5lbs. If you are in reasonable fitness, 5lbs shouldn’t be heavy. I’d glady take a few extra grams for a more durable product.

Compare it to a 1.3 kg 13 inch, its pretty heavy. I’m ok with it, but my father think it’s quite heavy.

I wouldnt say its massively stiff but for its size and weight its about the same as most other laptops of its class. I tend to lift mine by the dGPU, surprised i’ve not broken anything yet.

yeah I am surprised how much force those two screws are taking. You think there will be two extra screws to hold the bay secure (like clamp it toward the machine maybe), not so much.
But then, the problem is never with the area near the hinge. Framework have bomb-proof hinges, pretty much.
