Framework Desktop discussion

OMG this is exactly what i been looking for! Such a awesome ITX. Love this. Design and look is just fantastic. Would have loved to see 2 RJ45 for using this as a NAS server
But see there is a slot free so maybe it can be used for a card. Also great you can select noctua fan. They are the best.
Also being able to configure with more memory. Just fantastic that you allow to configure so much.

Only concern is how well does it work with linux ? have you guys tested it?

Wanted to pre-order but the order page is somewhat wrong.

You see here the deposit is 1000 kr (Swedish Krona) = about 100 dollar
But when i go to the payment it wants to charge 1000 USD which is 10 times more than it should. Can you please fix this?

This ticks nearly all the boxes Iā€™ve had for a portable-ish system Iā€™ve been seeking to fill in the gap between hastily purchased crappy laptop and huge workstation/mounted server. But:

  • That close-ended PCIe Ɨ 4 slot limits what kind of AICs can be inserted and the case doesnā€™t even accommodate an AIC. So opted to pre-order the mainboard only and plan to run it via a PCIe 4.0 redriver AIC to a PCIe riser that can accommodate PCIe Ɨ 16 AICs.
  • No ECC memory for other things Iā€™d want to use it for, but itā€™s not needed anyway for its primary purpose. Otherwise it could be eventually upcycled for workstation/server uses.

What do the SoC thermals look like with cooler master cooler , with AI workloads we will hit the max 120W tdp often I think (especially at training) . So under consistent 120W what do the thermals look like ?

Can you please check with the team about the deposit fee? I really like to put a pre-order but the page shows the wrong deposit fee.

Best option is likely to place the order and open a support ticket, I have had to do similarly when ordering from other retailers. use a credit card, and if Framework refuse to refund the difference you may consider canceling the order.

Thanks for the tips. I did that actually, went ahead and ordered and even though it showed 1000 USD it charged 94 dollar, very bizarre
So i was charged the correct amount somehow.

Framework support is also looking into why this is happening.

looks like this is an issue on your bank/financial institution website :frowning:

I have used this card allot and this is the first time i see this.
Either way i canā€™t do anything as iā€™m just in between Framwork as a company and the card issuer. There must be some bad information between the request and what is shown on the app where i approve.
If i go the the card issuer they will for sure ask questions and data i canā€™t provide and point me to Framework and vice versa so in order for this to be resolved the companies need to talk to each other.
But from my side since the amount charged is correct iā€™m assuming this is a cosmetic issue. The 1000 USD is actually 1000 SEK but somehow the apps shows the wrong currency.

Will try to contact the card issuer too just incase, you never know

The PCIe 4x slot while not a deal breaker is an annoyance, especially since its not one capable of slotting a 16x card in itā€¦ They do make connectors with the far side cut out that are capable of this to ease compatibility, or even a 16x slot thatā€™s only wired for 4x.

I havenā€™t looked into what for media encode/decode this chip has. But I wonder if it could make a decent small, quiet, ā€œgood enoughā€ video editing computer. I actually built a small-ish, Mini-ITX PC for video editing that can live on my desk behind my monitor not long ago. Itā€™s too late now, but Iā€™m wondering if this would have had similar (or maybe better?) performance for similar money, and a smaller form factor.

Obviously, the Framework desktop wonā€™t be for everyone. And itā€™s kinda funny for a company whose whole purpose was to make repairable, upgradeable devices, is now making a ā€œdesktopā€ with soldered APU and RAM. But itā€™s still better than a lot of mini PCs these days, in that regard. Weā€™ll see how the performance shakes out once people have them for a while and can put them through their paces.

From other videos (Asus Z13) specially the top model is very capable actually.
They play with AAA titles and do editing with very advanced filtering and stuff. Its similar to M4 or M4 pro. Somewhere in between there. That is a huge achievement of the first try for this product line.
Only thing is this thing is not cheap. But then again you get what you pay for

What I need to know is will the UEFI allow for autoboot? Iā€™d love to pick one up as a SFF workstation, but I would need to to run 24/7. If thereā€™s a power outage, I would need it to automatically boot once power is restored.

The no gpu module thing is kinda sad but itā€™s still interesting that framework is looking into NUC-style stuff

For a ā€œNUCā€ format machine do you think you need a GPU when the one included is similar to 4060-4070?
I bought a old small form factor ADA card, old nvidia 2000 series card which costed me to much to even mention. Damn hard to find these small form factors in EU. With this i know i wonā€™t need any additional GPU.

By the way there is external eGPU you could use. I donā€™t like them but thats one option perhaps.
eGPU=External GPU, usually some brands make the boxes itself and you put in a gpu inside.

Now that the Mac Studio can support up to 512GB of RAM, I wonder if AMD and Framework has something to match that on their roadmapā€¦and when? Just when we thought AMD is pulling up to Appleā€¦Apple moves forward again and still able to say ā€œIā€™m the only oneā€ [offering more than 128GB of on SOC NPU-accessible memory, in this case].

I believe they already have an answer. They showcase you can buy multiple boards and connect them together similar to how SLI GPUā€™s worked. iā€™m sure it will be way way cheaper too

But only a fraction of people will ever need that much RAM. I edit 4k video on my MBP 16 inch with 64GB and it did it with soooo ease, never eget got close to its limit. But sure there is for sure someone who can use it all, specially running big LLM ā€¦

ps. bandwidth might not be as good though , still pretty nice

The answer isnā€™t exactly a like for like competitive solution though. Hence the ā€˜moves forwardā€™ comment. Unless you only consider price as the only necessary competitive factor.

Of course it isnā€™t. I donā€™t disagree.
And I didnā€™t say its a exact match for what Apple sells, more that there is a answer for more power and memory access. For some use cases this is a valid option.

Like with this setup you canā€™t possibly reach appleā€™s 819 GB/s speed.

Still this is the first product out, very solid start i would say.
