Framework Laptop 16 Potential Driver Issue

Hello,
I’ve been curious about a potential issue with a driver update or general problems with the 16’s GPU. Has anyone else experienced large lag spikes when playing games? Although it was working to a higher quality around 3-6 weeks earlier, it feels as though after updating the drivers it has begun to perform worse. For context I am using 32 gigs of ram with the Radeon 780m.

where did you get the drivers?
You should use Framework’s own GPU driver; Framework have customized it a bit.
AFAIK there’s nothing new beyond 3.0.5. This does mean that Framework’s drivers are 6 month out of date, but there isn’t much you can do.
You can do that by getting the Framework windows driver installer (exe), then unpack it with things like 7zip.

I was using the AMD driver updates, I’ll try redownloading drivers from frameworks. Thank you for the advice, as I did not know frameworks used custom drivers.

This worked! After testing a couple games, this was definitely the issue.

They do. If you click on the “driver and software” in Adrenaline, the driver version is 23.40.18.02-240222a-40089C-Framework.

Curiously it took me a few attempts to install the AMD Adrenaline software. But just the software, nothing beyond that.

More curiously, the chipset driver framework provides is just the default chipset driver from AMD. I binary compared them, the two installers are identical.

Generally you shuold download laptop drivers from the manufacturer, unless there is no manufacturer driver (ahem, Acer). Desktop is sort of whatever.

I’ve only used the Framework driver bundles lately and DDU’d before installing this past time and in Adrenaline it DOES NOT say Framework! It says 24.20.60.01 and I have indeed been experiencing horrible framerate and lag spikes shortly after installing the driver bundle. It also says the driver was released 3/21/25.

Did it or Windows auto-update it?

Might be Windows.
As I mentioned earlier the “newest” version from framework is 23.40 …

Unless there is secretely a new driver bundle ..
There is a new driver bundle! April as well. Been missing out big time, damn.

No, it does. 24.20.60.01-250321a-41432C-Framework. You have to go to Settings (click on the gear icon), then go to System > Hardware & Drivers > Software & Driver Details.

Large lag spike you say? Let’s fire up Derail Valley.

Yep it does that. But I dont think it does anything particularly different.

The other interesting opbservation, is that in the case of the integrated, the GPU and CPU can sometimes fight for the same TDP, especially for a game that is heavy on both (such as derail valley), which will lead to stuttery performance.

OK yeah I didn’t know you had to expand that. It does indeed say framework.

I’ve actually found the integrated GPU doesn’t have this problem. Only the discrete GPU has this issue and it’s present even if game graphics are lowered to the point necessary for the integrated one.

I’ve also noticed, at least in the case of Fallout 4 (which required turning all the AMD features off to run in the first place) that the AMD overlay can’t be brought up since this issue started (whereas I believe it could before).

You said 780M, which is the integrated. The discrete is 7700S.

There seem to be a issue of massive performance hit when your battery go below 95%. Please verify.

Also since this is not OP’s issue, maybe start a new one.
