Framework supporting far-right racists?

It’s astounding how oblivious you are to the irony of your own words. The entire thread began with an attempt to smear people with labels like “racist”, “fascist” and “Nazi”, etc. If you don’t like getting a taste of your own medicine, then maybe it’s time for you to rethink your attitude.

I hold left-wing views. Or at least they used to be considered left-wing a couple decades ago. But when I look around at all the other people being lumped in with “alt-right”, “far-right”, “fascist” and so forth, I see mostly people with similar views and experience to my own. Which begs the question whether it’s better to be associated with them, or with the extremists who have hijacked what’s passing for the left these days? It doesn’t surprise me that bit of nuance was lost on you.

Framework set up a big tent, invited a bunch of combatants into it, and stepped back to watch. (You’ll never guess what happened next…)

It’s been quite a while since anyone posted anything new and valuable on this thread. There are some recent valuable posts, but they’re not saying anything new. The vast majority of messages are from a few overrepresented people deliberately misinterpreting things to hurl wild accusations at entire strawman groups.

Oops, all flamebait. It won’t die out on its own.

Unless Framework is pivoting to become an alt political hellforum, I’m really unclear on what their vision is here.

Again with the mischaracterisation of me. You’re aware there’s more than one person posting in this thread, right? And that I may or may not agree with the positions or tactics or words of other people who seem to hold similar views to me on this subject? I’ve addressed you as an individual rather than treating you as a generic poster with differing views, you’re the one who needs to rethink their attitude here.

I know I said I wasn’t going to reply, but I felt the need to defend myself against someone smearing me by ascribing things to me that I never said and have been careful not to say. Now that’s out of the way, I’m going to return to not engaging with you.

Again with the hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness.

The fact that you felt the need to leap to their defense belies your disassociation with their views and tactics.

Reciprocity is a bitch isn’t it. There’s a lesson there.

This is one of the most bad faith things I’ve ever read in this thread. So bad faith it’s legitimately funny, lol.

it would be hilarious to imagine framework is keeping this open because they believe that we can find unity through the “marketplace of ideas” under this big tent using this thread

but it totally wont just be reddit 2 because we’re different and we’re smart trust

I doubt it’s anything more than they are showing they don’t hide or censor criticism towards the company, good or bad. How much that is working out for them, I don’t know…

i would agree with your point but they locked down other areas like their discord or abandoned social medias like bluesky/mastodon due to this controversy, so i would say it’s a lack of action to respond to criticism and having us duel it out reddit style is my issue

I just saw the post titled “Framework was burned by the linux scene and should support other FOSS” is closed and due for deletion in a few days.

I’d like to add my whole hearted support to this idea. The Linux scene has increasingly been turning into an absolute dumpster fire of extremist political crusaders. As an alternative, OpenBSD would be an especially nice option to have work out of the box on framework hardware.

Customer choice is fantastic and competition is great. I would love to have a first class nix like experience that makes Linux compete on the technical solutions and not just momentum of the industry. In the late 90’s we didn’t know who would win, BeOS, BSD, Gnu/Linux Distros, OS/2 and we had choices…

It’s the casual transphobia for me.

You are not at all alone. They are the vocal minority pretending to represent a majority that wants nothing to do with them.

This thread continues to devolve. @catastrophic end this. Please. Look at the comment above mine. What more proof do you need that this thread is not really discussing Framework? It’s stuff that is at best incidental to Framework. We have gone from DHH and Hyprland to trans rights, the plight of Gaza/Israel, Antifa now, “woke ideology”, etc.

Y’all closed the Coreboot thread for like a month because you thought it was getting too heated. That decision was made inside of a day or two. That thread at least was focused. This thread is a circle jerk. And this thread has been allowed to essentially become a dumpster fire over the course of a month with only token attempts at moderation. Only the truly brazenly offensive responses were moderated.

This is my last post. I’m muting this thread now and I recommend everyone else do the same. I lose brain cells every time I look at it. At first it was genuine interest, then a vain attempt at inducing decency in responses, then resignation and grotesque amusement, now it’s just disgust I feel.

I’m not the only one who wants the thread closed. I have seen like half a dozen other users call for the same. Every position under the sun has been adjudicated at length in the court of public opinion.

Like I said, I’m muting this thread now. That or I’m gonna start spamming this thread with meaningless drivel because that can’t possibly be more off-topic than the crap that has been posted in this thread.

I see the big tent is putting in overtime today. We’re really reaping the fruits of that approach to discourse.

While I have also said what I think I’ve needed to say, I can’t help but suspect that the current surge in non-sequiturs and bad faith posts is probably an attempt to get it closed.

I checked because I was curious and this nothing burger discord drama still going? -.-

Hopefully internet trolls will fail to sabotage the one company making a dent into repairable and upgreadable laptops…

This is why we can’t have nice things…

Please feel free to petition the mod to reopen the thread, As I have done. They probably stretched thin a bit now and thus acting in haste, and may sometimes throw the baby out with the bath water in terms of deleting well intentioned threads.

Are you real? Is this thread real? What the hell is happening on this forum?

I was pointed to this thread by people at KubeCon and I can’t believe I actually sat here and read it all. In the time it took for me to read this I could have made multiple pull requests to open source projects.

I don’t think people truly understand just how much they support far-left or far-right parties in life by way of paying taxes, investing in markets, buying products for the home, eating at food establishments, etc. Truly, the only way to not to support any far-left or far-right movement is to not play the game, which is a non-option for many, many people. The question then becomes why do people choose to care about specific cases (i.e., DHH, Hyprland) but ignore other cases (i.e., investments, products). Is it because people do not know what actually happens in these other cases? Is it something else? Unsure.

Regardless, I’m not going to sit here and yell at Framework for giving DHH or Hyprland money. I’m not a fan of DHH myself but I tried Omarchy and made my own decision that I don’t like or need it for my use case. I instead stick with regular Arch. I also researched the Hyprland details and came to a similar conclusion of there not being any ongoing hatred in that community. I tried Hyprland, liked it, but still went back to COSMIC since I liked that better. I’m sure there are more details about DHH and Hyprland that perhaps I’m missing but I don’t use either of their projects and I’m not a member of their communities. At the end of the day, it’s Framework’s decision to sponsor them, not mine. It’s not “my money” after I’ve made the transaction. Will the details in this thread affect how I spend my money in the future? Perhaps. Will I sell my existing Framework products because of this thread? Nah.

What I do want to yell at Framework about is their unequal support of the other projects they sponsor. DHH by way of Omarchy is getting almost all of the Framework marketing hype lately. It’s as if the other projects Framework sponsored mean nothing to them since Omarchy was released. Others have mentioned this earlier but the Framework social media accounts have mentioned Omarchy far more than any other projects lately. So much so that if you removed the Framework name and branding I’d think it was an Omarchy account. In my opinion that’s silly because Omarchy is less of a distro and more of a collection of customization scripts. Then you compare Omarchy to something like Bluefin and the difference is stark. Bluefin partners with other projects and companies to enhance the overall Linux hardware support landscape while trying to improve the Linux workstation experience while Omarchy is just cobbling scripts together. Why isn’t Framework working with projects like Bluefin more than just sending them hardware? It’s a missed opportunity especially when Framework firmware hasn’t had the best track record. Point is, there’s so much marketing behind Omarchy that’s doing nothing more than “buy Framework, use Omarchy” and not nearly enough marketing behind the projects that are trying to make the Framework experience better.

The irony involved has got to give you a chuckle though. Two can play that game. As the saying goes, don’t concern yourself with the splinter in someone else’s eye until you’ve dealt with the wooden beam in your own.
