I am having hard-freezes (cursor freezes, audio will sometimes continue for a few seconds but everything on the screen freezes). I have to hold the power button to hard-restart.

As far as I’ve seen, only happens while playing video - eg, Youtube or other online players. I haven’t ruled-out overheating, but I’m doubtful because I haven’t noticed it be particularly hot when it happens.

I have installed updates as they are suggested by the OS. Of course I’m suspicious that it’s a video-driver or video-hardware problem. This page doesn’t offer much, and this page doesn’t offer any special drivers for Linux.

I did update the bios (to the version listed above), but the problem is still happening.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

check your thermal paste, it might have squished out…
what is the encoder used for the videos your computer is struggling with?

Do you mean the processor or video chip?

Either way, I don’t think heat is a problem. I just installed a CLI sensors package and started playing a Youtube video. It froze as immediately on clicking “play” - with none of the cores (ISA adapter, PCI adapter, or ACPI interface) being above 60 degrees C.

Interestingly, it seems that the computer does still respond. The only way I can tell is that the audio of the video will stop and start on tapping the spacebar. Unfortunately trying to CTRL-W to close the window doesn’t seem to work.

I meant the video chip but that probably isn’t the problem…
can you check if your thermal paste has squished out?
