I am running Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS on a 64-bit Framework 13.
The processor is 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1185G7 @ 3.00GHz × 8
The graphics are Mesa Intel® Xe Graphics (TGL GT2)
Sometimes I am able to play videos, but usually after a few minutes the computer freezes. (Specifically everything except the sound freezes.) If I press the power button for 10 seconds to turn the computer off, and then wait a bit and press the power button again, I can turn the computer back on and it works fine again, until I’m playing video.
I read that this could be a GPU overheating issue. I keep my computer on a well-ventilated surface and have tried setting it on a cold pack. This seems to allow me to watch video for a bit longer but it keeps happening.
I would like a more permanent solution to this problem, would appreciate any advice on parts that might need replacing or anything else I can do to be able to watch video on my computer.
I ( and I think others ) have the same / similar problem with kernels newer than 6.6.x. If you are running a kernel version 6.7 or newer, try reverting back to 6.6.10 or slightly older.
I’m running Pop! OS but it is Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with some changes.
In testing, I also found that if I run an sshd listener , I’m able to ssh to my fw 13 after the display locks up and can look at the log and kill the gnome session and log back in normally in the GUI and run again for a while. It seems to be to display session that hangs but the logs are not very revealing.
It also works to switch to a termianl session and kill/restart the graphical session that way.
Info on tty mode on Gnome:
To get to a one of the four tty shells in gnome, press one of ctrl-alt-F3 thru F6.
To return to the graphical shell from a tty shell, type alt-F2.
Alt-f1 takes you to a new login session (GDM).
Within a tty shell, alt-arrow moves between tty shells.
I know this is not the best solution but it may help to see if it is the same issue.
Maybe try the newer Ubuntu or the supported fedora build biited from a usb drive to see if a newer GDM / Gnome etc along with the newer kernel is stable. I have not tried that yet.
The problem started to arise between kernel version 6.6.49 and kernel version 6.6.52.
I did not try any intermediate versions to pinpoint the exact version that is causing the issue.
For now I am sticking to kernel LTS versions and I am waiting for an udate on nixpkgs to see if it fixes the issue (the 6.6.53 just got out on kernel.org yesterday).
But, oh yes, this is annoying.
I have a similar problem (11th Gen i7, Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS, GNOME 42.9)
I hadn’t noticed it just being on video - often seems to happen when I am scrolling with the MX Master 25 bluetooth mouse, but with the touchpad too, sometimes.
I am by no mean a systems person, but I have managed to use
Sorry. No news. I have not been trying the new kernels as they become available. The update app on pop! OS seems to provide a few minor updates per release until the next release is used. They’ve been on 6.9.x since mid July. I may try 6.10.x when it is out if that happens and the expected release date of Pop 24.04 with the new Cosmic desktop is still a ways out.
