FW 12, Initial Thoughts

I’ll add my initial review/thoughts here as mine got delivered today:

Thanks @BigT for helping me diagnose my Penoval USI 2.0 stylus issue earlier (change the stylus in the bios to USI 2.0)

If i had to sum it up with one or two words it would be “pleasantly surprised”

Specs:

Fedora 42
i5-1334u
64gb 5600mhz Crucial SODIMM
2tb Sabrent Rocket SSD
grey w/ 2x USB-C, 2x USB-A
paperlike screen protector: https://viascreens.com/screen-protector/framework/laptop-12-2-in-1/paper

After setting this thing up all day on a full battery: installing fedora, all my apps like vscode, discord, signal, steam with a bunch of games, I still have 20% battery after like 6 hours.

Reading all the doom and gloom framework community posts and reddit posts about how Framework should have made a more powerful machine.

It’s sturdier than expected, i expected it to be plastic and flimsy and it’s actually very solid, the keyboard is great to type on and i might actually like the trackpad better than my FW13.

I bought this device because i wanted something i could consolidate 3 devices when i travel (laptop, steamdeck, tablet) into 1 device.

The i5 is very snappy and on par with my M1 Macbook Pro, the speakers are tinny as expected but there’s more bass than i thought, they aren’t as terrible as the reviews make them out to be, same with the battery life. I left the screen brightness at the 25-30% it started with out of the box, battery is the default balanced on Fedora out of the box.

I was even tinkering running Ollama and local LLMs on it on battery and this thing flies, it’s very usable with some 1.5b, 3b, 5b, and 7b models:

I’ll be testing a bunch of steam games later:
