300 and I’m adding the CoolerMaster Case and a1Tb drive I have … I’ll add pic’s of that but it’s the one from Frame.work.
I just need to get rid of it.
With the Ram, 1TB drive & case included I was tempted, but upon looking closer it seems the power mosfets have overheated, to the point of melting plastic. Left side, between the two usb ports.
In case you didn’t run into the thread on the issue, it’s here: [IN TICKET] Piece of mainboard partially melted
Interesting. The system exhibits zero issues, every port works. No big deal, I’ll throw it in my test stack and remote into it if MS can ever get RDP working on Win11 24H2 again…
lol, I hate the way this message board works…
Maybe consider contacting Framework Support (regardless of whether you plan to keep it or sell it), for safety reason, because melting plastic covers is not in-spec (one would think).
I’ve tried… Pretty much getting pushed in circles. They just keep asking me for more and more pictures. I’m not sure how many pic’s I can send them of the same areas. I’m giving up on that route… I agree with it being dangerous and will just throw it away…
Kind of makes me not really want to “support” the cause…
Oh, it shouldn’t be “dangerous” really. Worse case, if the chip gets hot enough, it can de-solder itself. And, of course, the port will stop working. Port might stop working before it gets to that point as well.
The chip can only heat it’s immediate small area. It can melt that plastic cover since it’s so thin and is right up against it. But the temperature needed to spontaneously ignite a plastic is far higher than that to melt it, the chip would just de-solder itself before it could hope to reach it. The only thing that would be a problem is if the chip was up against the li-ion battery. It would have to be touching, though. And the chips and ports are far away.
If the ports are functional currently, I’d just put on note on it about the potential of the ports dying & a link to the thread. Drop the price, no warranty / as-is, someone should want it if it’s priced low enough. Way better than it being landfill. Could cross list on reddit.com/r/frameworkmarket and ebay.
They are requesting a close-up picture of the chip to evaluate the damage.
Hi,
Seriously, why would support need any more pictures than that single one at the beginning of this thread?
Its quite obviously faulty. I don’t think that “melty” affect is photo shopped.
It can, if the loose chip causes a short. Even if the laptop itself is fire-resisting, the heat can damage its surroundings. Imagine the heat buildup in a backpack in the car trunk, when nobody notices for a while… (-shudder-)
I was briefy tempted to buy the board as spare donor for a differently challenged board (or the other way round), but considering the risk of ending up with an unusable Frankenboard, the shipping costs and customs dury (~€53 alone) made me baulk.
In that case, we should be able to find a more environmentally friendly solution with at least a little money for you. DM me if you like to haggle.
Thank you… THAT is my issue. I have sent them ~6-8 pic’s very clear pics of the area. Either they’re going to do something or they aren’t. Don’t keep asking me to rip the damn thing apart over and over because I’m using it as a test server right now. For now, all 4 ports work without issue.
