FW13 with Samsung Odyssey G9?

Hello!

I am currently planning the purchase of my FW13 for business tasks, so Excel, Chrome etc. No gaming!
So far specs I am planning. Open to suggestions if changes needed:

  • 7640U - 2.8K Display
  • 32 GB (1 x 32 GB)
  • 1 or 2 TB SSD
  • Win 11

I have a Samsung Odyssey G9.
I want to use it with full resolution (5.120 x 1.440) & 120Hz preferrably, if not possible 60Hz.

Is it possible? :thinking:

The Odyssey has a HDMI 2.1, DP 1.4 and two USB 3.0.
At bare minimum (if possible) could I plug the laptop directly into the Odyssey?
So charging through screen (is this possible?) & signal.

I searched a lot about docking stations but not really found a good answer (at least for my knowledge level).

Does someone know docking stations or USB hubs that will work?
Would appreciate low cost, not sth for 200 €+ if possible.

It should be possible to use the Framework 13 to run the Odyssey G9 monitor.

Some things to watch out for:

  1. Use DisplayPort as the Framework HDMI is only HDMI 2.0b which only supports 4k 60hz.

  2. Check the maximum power out that the odyssey g9 can support and make sure it is above 65w.

  3. Charging and signal should be possible, but it can sometimes be a hit or miss with USB C display compatibility. You’ll have to find this out yourself.

If you don’t plan on upgrading to 64 GB of RAM, I highly suggest getting 2 x 16 GB sticks as dual channel ram will improve your cpu performance.

I clearly didn’t read your ‘specs’ very well as the 1 x 32 RAM should have been an obvious issue but thanks to @TheTRUEAsian for notify you of that.

I have a Raspberry Pi server and a Raspberry Pi desktop which has USB ports for keyboard and mouse and and HDMI port for a monitor. This desktop is my daytime addiction.

In the evenings I use the Framework for website updates, a small amount of coding and lots of browsing none of which require me to use any peripherals.

I have two USB A expansion ports etc. if I do want to connect some ancient artifact.

Unless you power the laptop from a monitor and you want to connect more than 3 peripherals that cannot be connected via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi then yes a Docking station would be ‘essential’

It’s basically a BT dongle for Mouse & Keyboard + Screen & Loading. That’s it.

Dongles will go into the expansion ports. Then I need DP to USB C for the screen and a power adapter.
Power adapter will be the default FW one, or is there a better / cheaper alternative?

The FW power adapter seems fine although there have been complaints about the cable. After 3 years my cable is fine, but then it is pretty stationary as i use another when I’m travelling.

I’ll update with links to the fraying FW cables and the one I use when travelling.

As for better that is a personal issue as for cheaper another . . . .

My alternative cable is made with Fairtrade gold, cost in such a case £ is not an issue.

Not that I am recommending anything but depending upon the size of the BT dongle you may be interested in . . .

thanks for the DongleHider tip. I saw it on Reddit too.
But 40 €+ (extreme shipping cost) isn’t worth it for me.
