FW16 2230 NVMe Bus reduction

I’ve noticed that the bus width for the 2230 NVMe on the new FW16 was reduced from 4 on the 7040 series to 2 on the AI 300 series.

This Article shows that the 7040 Laptop 16 has 4 lanes of PCIe 4.0 for both NVMe slots, while the new FW 16 only retains the 4 lanes for the 2280, resulting in a 2-lane reduction for the 2230 slot (2xPCIe 4.0).

Has anyone else noticed that, and will there be an explanation for why?

As I understand it, there weren’t enough PCIe “lanes” to do everything that the previous FW16 motherboard did, so they had to take a couple from someplace. The 2230 slot was the most logical place, since 2230 NVMe drives are far less likely to use them.

Yep, plenty of people did. Check this thread.

The reason is the old processor had 20 lanes and Framework 16 used 17 of them. The new processor has only 16 lanes, so something needed to go.
