FW16 Batch 16 Guild

Yes, getting very excited! Crazy to think we could the email next week :crossed_fingers:

Excitement is an understatement lol. Unfortunately, the 26th is a Sunday… Dare I hope for Friday the 24th? I do have Fridays off… That would be epic!

I did not include ram or storage with my order, anyone got any recommendations for 16gb ram and decent storage…
I was thinking 1stick of 16 for easy upgrade to 32 later ?
But yeah no clue on brands or if there are certain ones that are not compatible… Hmm maybe there is a post or guide somewhere already.

I bought myself an ADATA 32GB RAM-Stick, because I want to be able to upgrade to 64GB in a few years.
And I got a Lexar NM710 2TB as main SSD.

The Lexar should work without problems and additionally is a one-sided SSD, so I will be able to add a short SSD later on.
The ADATA RAM should work too, as it is DDR5-5600, but I have seen nobody else that used it already, so I’ll find out once the laptop arrived…

They have some information in their knowledgebase:

And then there is this thread on reddit where people share which memory worked for them:

The framework-branded 32GB stick I got with my FW16 reports being from A-DATA (AD5S560032G-SFW), so no problems there. My second 32GB stick is from Kingston (KF556S40-32), so even mixed population does work.

Oh, mine is branded AD5S560032G-S…
I wonder if there is a difference between them
Because it was a returned Stick of RAM, it only cost me 90€, instead of the 180€ in the framework store

I just ordered a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD and a Crucial 48GB SO-DIMM. Didn’t want to bump the 64GB limit until Linux has the S/G bug fully squashed, I can throw in another 48GB once that’s fixed. I’ll hopefully have a smaller SSD from an old laptop to use for alternate OS experiments where I don’t want a VM.

The additional FW stands for “Framework”, I assume

I went with 2 sticks of crucial 32GB and WD Black SN850 1TB SSD. They were both stupid cheap on Black Friday.

Black Friday? They’ve been sitting around for a while.
I ordered mine in March and I thought that was a bit too long of a wait between the SSDs and the laptop itself.

I initially Pre-ordered 1 x 32G but later got bored with all the waiting and assuaged my angst by asking support to add another 32G, LOL… That should be a crazy improvement over the 6G of ram my previous long term Daily had (RIP). My current temporary one (A work DELL Latitude 3440) that I swapped the HDD for my Mint SSD and upgraded from 8G to 16G Ram (Shhhhh, don’t tell the IT guys… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:).

I ordered the SN850X NVMe™- M.2 2280 - 2TB And I’m sure it will be more than enough space considering my daily driver has a 120G SSD that I bought back when 256G SSDs first came out and 120Gs started to drop in price… That hasn’t stopped me from debating whether I should order another 2TB of storage though.

I think watching the spreadsheet is worse than having a tracking number in-hand and watching it move through the system. Maybe I’m just a little bit ADHD/impatient :stuck_out_tongue:

Does anyone know if it is possible to put a hold on delivery? I know it sounds crazy, given how long we’ve been waiting, but the new proposed shipment schedule places the delivery window in a span of time when I am likely to be out of town. The last thing I want is to have a VERY expensive machine sitting on the porch for anyone to grab. I will have my mail held through USPS, but my understanding is that the FW16 is being shipped via FedEx. I know it’s still possible that there will be further delays and that all of this may be moot, but how can I ensure the laptop isn’t delivered to my house in my absence?

Maybe have a look here?

Perfect! I feel much better about the timeline now. Now I just need to wait for the emails to arrive. Thanks!

I’m actually also caught a little off-guard by the potential May arrival of the laptop. But not complaining!

I am not sure when to put the money into my account. I paid with an account I use for small international payments when I travel, and normally don’t keep more than a hundred or so in there. And I will actually be travelling at that time, so not an ideal period to have a load of money on the travel card! We will get a notification e-mail about when our account will be charged, right? Because I am aiming to have the money in there as short as possible.

Accordingly, I am also not sure whether I will be in the country for the delivery. I think someone else will be at the house to receive it for me though, so hopefully that will be fine.

Have to get on with building my new desk, so that the laptop has a comfy home!

Oh that’s a good point actually. I should talk to the neighbours to see if they’d be willing to take it in for me in case I’m camping when it arrives. Thanks for mentioning it!

This is what they sent when I bought the frame work 13…

“We expect to ship your order out between one and three weeks from today. Before we do that, we want to make sure that all of the information we have on file is up to date

Please make sure your default payment method is valid within the next 3 business days to avoid any delays once your order is ready to ship. This window of 3 business days is a grace period where we will not charge your saved payment method, to allow changes to be made. Before we ship your order, we will charge the remaining balance of blah blah :)”

Also, talking of OSes, I saw the announcement of https://lix.systems over the weekend so I might give that a try when it arrives. (for full disclosure, I’m friends with one of the core team members)

Good thing is this works with external GPUs, so if you need to go that route you can. I just know almost all laptop GPUs are undervolted and worse cooled then their desktop counter parts.

Also on your Dell, it might be well worth it to dig into bios and do some tuning. Just a lot has come out about board partners and Intel not talking, and setting the default values so high to cause massing instability.
