I’m working through an issue where my FW16 will crash intermittently (maybe 1 out of every 10) times I unplug it from my Thunderbolt 3 dock.
I’ve seen a few dock related posts, but none seem quite the same as mine, so I’ll post mine:
Typically, the crash when plugging the dock in will look like a black screen on the laptop, steady power light, with the system unresponsive to any input on keyboard/mouse. The only way to recover is to hold down the power button until the computer turns off and then cold boot.
The crash when unplugging the dock is similar. System is unresponsive, but sometimes I can see portions of some of the windows I had open, and sometimes I can move the mouse cursor with the trackpad. The only remediation is the same – manually powering the system off and cold booting.
My dock is a Plugabe TBT3-UDZ. I have 2 4k displays connected, as well as a USB mouse, keyboard, webcam and ethernet cord. I have no issues at all with the dock during normal operation, the issues only appear when the dock is connected or removed.
I only plug the dock into the USB 4.0 ports (the ports closest to the monitor). Anyone have any ideas on what might be happening here?
FW16 7840HS, 780M GPU
Ubuntu 25.04, 6.14.0-37 kernel
KDE running in X11
BIOS 03.03
Incorrect it is not thunderbolt. But it has capacity of 40Gbps anyway.
Reason why it cannot be thunderbolt is because thunderbolt is only within intel cpu and AMD has no capability to have thunderbolt even without certificate.
So using thunderbolt docks may be unstable in USB 4 port.
The tl;dr is that USB4 is generally backwards compatible with TB3.
My dock works great until typical use. I’m having issues only when plugging it in and out, and even then only once out of every 5-10 times. It’s just really annoying because when it crashes, I lose all my open apps and have to do a hard power off, which doesn’t feel good.
I actually bought the Plugable TB3-UDZ dock because of a recommendation on this very board for use with the FW16.
Think about it: There are very few USB4 docks. The vast majority that support 2x 4k displays are Thunderbolt.
There are definitely miscellaneous power management-related issues with FW16 and Thunderbolt 3 docks. I have two different docks (a Caldigit one and a Plugable one), and I’ve had a motherboard replacement. If the laptop is suspended while connected, when it wakes back up, most USB devices have died except occasionally those plugged in. New devices that are plugged in just never appear. Haven’t had it with other Linux laptops or on my macintoshes.
Thanks for this! Your experience sounds really similar to the issues I’m having.
I’ve disabled sleep on laptop lid close, because maybe part of the problem is wake from sleep / go to sleep behavior since I’m usually opening on closing the lid while I’m in the process of unplugging the dock.
Hopefully that will separate any wake from sleep issues (which I’ve also had independent of the dock) with connecting the dock issues.
