Looking at the BIOS yesterday I stumbled across a setting for Gaming that permits more RAM to be dedicated to the built-in GPU. (In the BIOS go to Advanced and “iGPU Memory” is the first item on the list.)

Default is 512 MB for video. I have a single 32 GB RAM card and gaming mode set the allocation for the GPU to 2 GB. This made a noticeable speed-up in web page rendering and opening documents (the laptop is running in “Balanced” mode in the power settings of Ubuntu).

I have never seen a setting for this in the BIOS of any of my other computers. A pleasant surprise.
