I ordered a Framework 13 a week ago, after several weeks of research. I’ve been looking at laptops for months now, and following stories about Framework longer than that. I was a bit worried, given some of the complaints I’d seen.
The package shipped the next day and was left on my doorstep the following Monday. Coincidentally, the memory and SSD I’d ordered from Amazon earlier showed up the same day, so I had a fully assembled laptop that evening.
So far everything is better than I’d dared hope. The hardware all seems to work perfectly – I always dread checking a new display for stuck pixels, but no problems this time. No badly fitted parts. The closest I have to a complaint is that the ports are still so tight that I have trouble disconnecting cables.
I booted up with my personal archlinux iso, and everything was recognized immediately. The only changes I’ve had to make were to scripts I’d customized to my old laptop. I was worried about the fan noise, but I’ve only noticed it while running memtest overnight and (much quieter) during compiles.
Coming from a cheap walmart motile it’s a huge improvement, so I have to say, “Good job Framework!” And thanks to all the early adopters that helped iron out the rough spots so I didn’t have to deal with them.
In another stroke of luck (good or bad, depending on your view) my old laptop’s battery blew up like a balloon right after I’d finished copying all the data from it. So, I didn’t buy a moment too soon, I’d say.
