Got my amd ai 300 mainboard. Battery loses roughly 10% every when its closed

I’m running ubuntu. is this a framework issue, bios issue, ubuntu issue, etc?

You close the lid, open it, and 10% battery is gone? Does it shut down when you open and close it 10 times?

Try upgrading your kernel to at least 6.11. Someone else mentioned this in the “high battery drain during suspend” thread that it improved their suspend drain a lot for their Ryzen AI board. Admittedly they’re using Linux Mint, but if I’m correct both are a form of Debian so I’d think it would also help with Ubuntu?

At least on Mint, it also unlocks the ability to control keyboard backlighting from the taskbar instead of having to hit FN + Spacebar, which is cool. You get more granular control of brightness for both screen and keyboard, which helps on battery.

Agreed, but try to get to at least 6.15.4, hopefully 6.15.8. The AI 300 series has seen huge improvements to graphics speed, stability and power/profiles in the past 6 months.

sorry for the crappy title and description. essentially ill close it for the work day. wake up the next day for work and now 10% on average is gone. so basically sitting for 12 hours or so.

Try reproducing it with this script: amd-debug-tools · PyPI

Basically when you’re ready to leave, run the script and when prompted for time put in 12h (43200 seconds when prompted). Rather than closing the lid, leave it as is. Look at the report when you get back. You can wake it manually if you want to.

Yeah, if you want to look at how much battery is lost it is best to let it lose battery by being unplugged.

cool. jsut making sure. that seemed to be the correct choice but its my first time doing this so i didn’t want to assume. a few hours into the test. we’ll see what tomorrow brings. i started at 98%.

I ran this yesterday btw shortly after your last response mario. After running this for 12 hours my battery went from 98 to 94.

I guess it’s not terrible, but I swear it was losing 10% overnight. I haven’t turned it on since checking the html report… but let me open up the laptop now and see what its at as i haven’t used it since (typing this msg on my macbook)

Edit: Just opened it up now. and im at 78 percent. That seems low no? Maybe im used to my macbook just sipping power when lid is closed?

10% overnight seems OK to me, especially if you have lots of memory. Nobody can touch Macbooks, not even Microsoft’s own laptops.

You can set up suspend-then-hibernate if you want to use less power overnight… but it’s worth doing some research first. It’s very distro-specific and comes with some drawbacks (like incompatible with secureboot).

And, yeah, I wish it was better.

On that note…I’ve been really tempted to try the MacBook Air…fully aware it’s the dark side. The entry model is at $1100 in Canada this past week or so, till end of the month.
