Hi all,
I have been searching far and wide to find an answer to my problems, tried a lot. Most topics I found that had workarounds closed since they all say these two things a fixed since kernel 6.13.x. But for me the problems are still here. Perhaps I have missed something stupid and haven’t updated some crucial part.
I have two separate problems:
The artifacts:
They mostly happen when I am using firefox and typing/scrolling. But they also appear on random moments on my desktop of other applications. But mostly when using my browser. (I am trying to capture it on film, but ofcourse now it got shy) I is a short screen tear from left to right in the bottom half of the screen, just a flash. If one happens, a few follow and then its gone for a while.
UPDATE: I finally got it on film! Normally is doesn’t go al the way down to the bottom like this, but its the same thing. You can see it here.
Second problem fullscreen focus overlay: [got a work around now]
I have steam and heroic launcher installed and have played games on it since I got it. On heroic I played Ozymandias: Bronze Age Empire Sim. First time I tried this, the game would not work when it is in focus. When I alt+tab the game would run nice and smooth as long as I had an other window open. When I click the game, it freezes within a few seconds. The first time I found the solution, I put my desktop scaling to 100% instead of 150%, and it worked great! (over a year ago) Today I tried playing it again, did the same scaling trick, but now it doens’t work anymore. Putting the game to windowed mode also doesn’t work. I have been trying to see if it is a wine or heroic thing so I went over to steam. In steam I have played the new game Blue Prince, without a problem. Fullscreen, good fps, good performance overall, played the entire game and no problem. Then I have tried a free game to see if that works I picked the fan made HoloCure game. This game gave me the same issues as Ozymandias did, but with this game putting it in windowed mode solved everything and it runs very smooth now. So here fullscreen is the issue altough Blue prince in using the same version of proton to launch it and works fine fullscreen. I really can’t figure out what the problem is.
AMD power performance modes could be an issue, but I also found people saying it was solved, and as far as I know I have updates everything. I tried putting my mouse focus to different settings, this also did not work for me. On ProtonDB the games seem to work fine with linux/proton, no one else has these issues.
UPDATE: for some reason Ozymandias started working again fine, perhaps after a reboot it will break again, will try and keep it up-to-date. Strange thing: tried HoloCure now on fullscreen, it seems to work when I only use my keyboard now. But when I try to move my mouse the same issue comes back right away. Perhaps the mouse was the problem all along, but Ozymandias doens’t have keyboard input so I had to use my mouse there. Strange thing about Heroic launcher. When I launch it via the launcher the game has a blackscreen, I have to alt+tab to get it working. But when I directly launch the .exe with wine the game works fine and doesn’t have the blackscreen at all.
UPDATE 2: I discovered why it started working yesterday. I plugged the laptop in to the adapter, a little more power and everything was fine. I figured today that is probably switched the powerprofile to ‘performance mode’, so i tried it today without the charger and yes it works, in both Ozymandias and HoloCure, both work fine fullscreen now. Strange thing is that on balanced mode, with the charger yesterday, Ozymandias runs fine, but HoloCure freezes. So it looks like the charger automatic ‘performance mode’ is different to the actual ‘performance mode’? I knew the performance mode was a problem, but I also read it should have been fixed, and I am completely up-to-date with all my drivers as far as I am aware.
