Graphical artifacts in Fedora 42

Which Linux distro are you using? Fedora 42

Which release version? Fedora 42

Which kernel are you using? 6.14.2-300.fc42.x86_64

Which BIOS version are you using? 03.05

Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? Ryzen™ 9 7940HS (no dGPU)

I recently installed Fedora 42 and I noticed that whenever I switch workspaces or switch to activities, there’s a quick graphical artifact that shows. It can be ignored easily, but I was wondering if anyone else encountered issues similar to this?

I’ve been reading around and some suggested downgrading the mesa drivers from 25 to 24. However, when I tried downgrading by running ‘sudo dnf downgrade mesa*’, it states that it cannot be downgraded any further than what I have installed.

EDIT: I know that this thread exists, and I have tried solutions posted there like downgrading the mesa versions, but as stated above, for some reason I can’t. So I assume those solutions only work for Fedora 41.

EDIT2: So I ran the Fedora 42 Live ISO on my mini-desktop (Minisforum) to see if the issue exists there. I did not get any graphical artifacts. Is it possible that this is related to the Framework 16 laptop?

Seeing similar issues on the Framework 13 AMD, running freshly installed Fedora 42. I also had the issue a few weeks ago on Fedora 41 and could fix it by downgrading mesa, which I can’t do anymore (as you mentioned in your post too).

EDIT: This post Graphical Corruption in Fedora 41 on AMD (BIOS3.06, Linux 6.13.5) - #27 by Erik_Drenth reminded me that I did indeed apply such workaround some time ago, I removed it now, will see if any artifacts still come up.

I have tried the solution you have linked. I thought it worked but it came back :frowning:

Another thing I have noticed is that I tried plugging a monitor to my laptop to see if I see the artifact on my monitor. I did not notice any artifacts on my monitor, while there were artifacts on my laptop screen.

I have similar problems, I also have artifacts on external screen…

You can downgrade to version 24.3.4 of mesa-va-drivers by downloading the RPM from Koji. See my writeup in Graphical Corruption in Fedora 41 on AMD (BIOS3.06, Linux 6.13.5) - #39 by John_Kaltenbach

Thanks for the guide. Unfortunately, I switched to EndeavourOS, but hopefully other people will find this info useful.
