Having Framework 13 AMD 7040 series laptop charge over night concerns

As a new owner of the framework 13 AMD 7040 series laptop Ryzen 5 7640U, I want to know if its dangerous to have my laptop connected to the USB C charger over night, even though before I installed LMDE 6 I entered the BIOS and set the maximum charge setting to 80% so its not 100% charge.

Does that damage the battery if I do that?

Thanks.

Charging to 80% overnight won’t damage the battery, the circuit stops charging automatically at that level. Even without setting the limit manually, the BIOS will discharge the battery from 100% to 85% after left charging for more than a week or so by default.

I think it’ll probably only do it if you are using the laptop.

It should work when the laptop is “off” (when power is plugged in the ec is allways running) but the laptop needs to be plugged in continuously for 1 week for that to kick in. The discharging process is also not going to be quick when off but it should be able to do it in a day or two.

I personally just use a fixed battery limit, especially since tlp fullcharge (other ways of temporarily overriding the limits already work) should be working soon (if it doesn’t already, have not checked in a while).

Surely almost nobody is stupid enough to intentionally leave the charger plugged in when the battery is fully charged, and they’re not even using the laptop. That EC feature is worth nothing if it requires the charger to be powered and connected for a week uninterrupted.
How does it drain power from the batteries anyway without using the laptop being on to draw power from the batteries?

A lot of people do that, there isn’t just one way to use a laptop and in the case of a “desktop-replacement” a laptop may spend ages in the exact same place plugged in, used or not.

While the actual utility of that feature is debatable this behavior is exactly what it is supposed to do. I have personally turned it off and use a fixed limit.

The laptop being plugged in means the ec and a bunch of other cirquitry on the laptop is running. There isn’t a lot of draw (way <1W) and it’ll take days to go from 100 to 85 but it will get there eventually.

Hell the laptop even slowly drains power when completely off but that’s a whole other can of worms

What does that mean for BIOS version? I’m using version 30.03.09. I see settings like Battery Extender, trigger and reset? Is it normal for the battery charge limit from 80 and then after awhile it drops a little to 79?

I’m on LMDE 6, so I’m not sure if other distros are accurate at displaying the percentage of battery life.
