How would it be if I added a egpu? I am coming from xbox series x with a 65’ roku tv if that helps at all if its like that or close than I’m good. The 16 is pretty much a dream right now.
It would help but eGPUs aren’t the best solution over a dedicated internal gpu. They would give a big performance increase over an iGPU, but you need to use an external display or you will lose even more performance. Plus it does have some performance overhead going through thunderbolt and can be buggy and sometimes unreliable. But it is a possible solution. But they can be expensive and depending on if you get one with a mobile or desktop GPU will determine how useful and upgradable it will be in the future.
If it were me I’d lean towards the FW16 being the end goal possibly and getting something to “make do” with while saving. I know the waiting solution is never the greatest solution. But when you add up the cost of a eGPU and possibly a display to go with it, it starts making more sense for the framework 16 wth its built in dGPU.
Maybe they’ll come out with some cool stuff in between tht time I’ll probably just get the 13 or the 12 or both I can get some help in the next few weeks
The 13 is going to be better for gaming overall and would be my overall my suggestion, but as other’s have suggested sometimes having a convertible with a touch screen and pen can be useful. The 13 will have a decently better performance plus it supports 2 memory channels which is also better for the iGPU and trying to game on it.
I was told the grants I qualify for will help me out so I won’t have to spend much out of pocket I’ll most likely go for the 13 and then the 12 at a later time
That is fair, just don’t want you to get an unreasonably expectation of how good the 12 and 13 are for gaming. Even the 16 isn’t great for gaming given is middle of the road RTX 5070 but I bought it anyway. I’ve spent a lot more than this on gaming laptops in the past and one of the biggest frustrations I’ve had is the hardware becomes obsolete before the rest of it does. Physically everything is fine well maybe with the exception of the battery, and the idea of being able to upgrade the internals is very appealing to me. Though I do wonder if us getting a Nvidia dGPU this generation is a lightning in a bottle moment and won’t happen again.
But the framework 13 is a good all rounder I think and should be fine for almost everything with the exception of gaming. Were you thinking of getting the older 7040 model or the newer AI 7 or AI 9 version? Either way you get to enjoy the benefit of future upgrades if something new and exciting comes out as a possible mainboard for the 13.
I was thinking one of the ai 7 it feels like a good price range for me and it won’t make my bf bust a vein lol
Yeah that will work. When I got my 16 the only reason I got the AI 9 version was I had planned on running it without the dGPU most of the time and I wanted the better iGPU for some stuff I run that is more GPU intensive. The AI 9 would be better at gaming but for most stuff outside of that won’t be a huge difference unless you end up with something that needs the extra cores.
My biggest reason for asking now is the term im wanting to do starts soon so I’ll need one asap if I wait til the next term I’ll have more time and maybe more money to choose from but one thing I definitely know is as long as it handle school I’m getting the 12 and then I’ll have time to get either and better maybe something else will be released that is even in the meantime im willing to wait
Not really for the budget minded and has its own pitfalls. It’s something I do myself but you have to know you’re going to like it even with the drawbacks. If you are going to go eGPU, don’t use Intel as the dGPU, it’s a nightmare.
The 12 would be just for school and maybe a job the 13 is what I was gonna use for gaming. I’ve watched quite a few different videos and I believe it’ll be good enough for me the way it is for now.
