Hi, does somebody know why Intel Core Ultra 300 series are available only on the fw13pro?
At least the ultra 5 325 would be amazing in the fw13.
Checked on the Ryzen AI 300 series the price difference between pro and non pro is 180€ or 310€, depending if the fw13 is configured with the 2.2k or the older 2.8k screen.
Considering the ultra 5 325 is on par with the ai 5 340 in cpu, with the ai 7 350 in igpu and within 10% in npu aswell with way higher soc TOPS, while bringing that way better battery life it would be a very good value at 1349€ - 310€=1039€ calculated from the comparison of the ryzen ai 300 series models.
Who needs more cpu can always go for a 7 class option and the older ryzen 5 7640u 200€ cheaper makes a good budget option.
That is because Framework laptop 13 Pro and Framework laptop 13 are different products. I’m assuming you’re referring to Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor (and not AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series). Ultra Series 3 is also not available on Framework Laptop 12, Framework Laptop 16 and Framework Desktop. As of today, it’s only available on Framework Laptop 13 Pro platform.
If you’d like to use it on Framework Laptop 13, you can purchase the mainboard and the chassis separately.
I guess that means if you’re new to Framework for a 13 inch current-year offering, your entry bar is now higher than previous years. i.e. There’s no non-pro with current-year processor being offered?
But the problem is that I have to buy every part in the shop separately and that is
- much work to select everything with risk of forgetting something
- so much more expensive that it’s probably cheaper to buy the pro model instead of all the individual parts.
the new mainboards fit in the old FW13, why is the older/cheaper version not configurable with the newer cpu? A FW13 with the Ultra 5 325 would be such an amazing machine because it’s affordable and has amazing batterylife. Sure it’s not high end on performance but thats not what it needs to be.
But again, if you need to buy an extra mainboard or everything separately that doesn’t work anymore

Why tough?, If you sell the parts separately, what prevents you from chugging them in a bag and ship them?, I know that in your current DIY configurator you test it before shipping, why not offer an alternative that doesn’t go through that effort and is only a compatibility guide?

We can absolutely create bundles, similar to the Bottom Cover Upgrade Kit. The challenge is that once a bundle includes a large number of individual parts, the packing and fulfillment process becomes significantly more complicated, and the overall end-user experience starts to suffer.
Of course, if a customer wants to manually add all the required parts to their cart and assemble the system themselves, we can’t really prevent that. But it’s important to note that this is very different from the experience of purchasing a complete laptop.
When a customer buys a laptop from us, they receive a carefully tested, properly packaged product with a deliberate unboxing experience. Random parts chugged in a bag doesn’t provide that same level of experience.
We want to make sure the overall laptop unboxing and installation experience remains solid and consistent for customers, and that’s really the main consideration here. Hope that makes sense.

It certainly does, it just doesn’t align with how I want to buy a Framework. I would prefer to buy the exact parts I want, with some reassurance they are at least nominally compatible.
You can do that. but you would need to add those parts to your cart individually and build the whole thing by yourself. 13 to 13 Pro compatibility chart should be helpful there.
What I am trying to say is that I would like for a more comprehensive compatibility guide.
I do hugely appreciate that Framework let me build the laptop I want, but it come at a significant cognitive load to check, and double check, compatibility of every part, and the completeness of the computer. Something I think Framework *could* provide a tool to help with.

“Pro” parts not being available in the configurator of the normal FW13 is understandable, including the display labeled as pro part.
The Ultra 300 series being a “pro” part is weird to me though - does this mean every new generation is only available for the pro now?
Is 2 generations for each CPU brand too much configuration? One latest gen and one last gen that sells out like 11th, 12th and 13th gen. Panther Lake could replace Meteor Lake long term.
Or will new CPUs only be available months after releasing first in the FW13pro…
I don’t want to blame you or something, I just want to understand what to expect, because it seems a bit intransparent here and the answer in the other thread doesn’t really answer this.
another option would be to offer a diy kit in the shop that includes most “default parts” like chassie, speakers, camera module aswell as a list what other parts will be required. Or like somebody already suggested, a completely custom configurator where you can pick every part freely (maybe with info on restrictions like the new battery not working with the old chassie) but in total still order them individually. The configurator just helps not to forget a part and the configured laptops don’t need to lie around assembled etc. or be assembled and tested.
That is already available as a unit for people who are looking at the 3rd party supplied CPU boards. Get that plus a 13pro mainboard and you have what this thread seems to be about.
