I have a single 48GB DRAM module currently installed: is it okay to add a single 32GB DRAM module or is matching different size modules a bad idea?
It’s for a Framework 13, Intel Core 7 Ultra 155H, Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS.

Welcome to the forums!
This isn’t the first time it’s been discussed here, but the short answer is that due to Intel Flex Memory, you’ll still get the benefits of dual-channel memory as long as both modules are able to clock down to a matching speed (that’s compatible with the Framework), which most likely is the case.
You may want to search for previous discussions but here’s a couple:
Mixing RAM is never recommended. Your laptop is only going to run as fast as the slowest RAM. Not sure if you’ll get full DDR with a mixed setup. Some BIOS’ for motherboards will run DDR with mixed RAM and some won’t.
As a general rule though, you want to run Matched RAM. Bought at the same time (so they come for the same lot, hopefully) and the same size.
Also, I believe the max you can run in the Framework is 64 gb. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
You can actually buy the Framework 13 (Ultra Series) with 96gb of RAM from Framework.
Thank you. Wasn’t sure how much they could take.
Thanks for the speedy and informative reply!
I had tried searching but the criteria I used was “different DRAM”. If I tried “different RAM”, I would’ve found those hits. Oh, well, live and learn.
