Yeah the one key module is going to be interesting. We’ll see the price and how it compares to multiple macro pads and also the design and other factors like software control.
A proof of concept doesn’t mean that there will be something offered for sell by framework. They also had a proof of concept for a egpu dock using the framework 16 graphic expansion card and it never materialized.
Didn’t they state that it will be sold? It was previously just something they were trying, before the annoucemnet event.
Do you mean the finished ortholinear board, rather than just the individual modules?
I am not sure how having only the individual modules would work. I know there are some talented designers in the forums so I guess it would be up to them if only the single key module is released. I think I saw some photos of a full fledged ortholinear module installed in a fw16 at the event. My assumption is that it is better if they sell that in the keyboard options section and on the marketplace.
The individual keys will be offered for sell but the full keyboard that was shown was said to be a proof of concept so until we hear otherwise, I am not sure it will be available.
As long as the individual key modules are available it will all be fine. Someone will offer up complete builds on Tindie or here. Keyboard enthusiasts will not be denied easily. And there is certainly a market.
And since FW is making a Proof or Concept ortholinear they’ll most likely put the build files up on their github.
Ngl, as shortly after they announced I was checking their github for a single key module footprint file (not up yet) just to play around with layouts.
When I close my eyes, I can see a Framework Laptop 16 with a split columnar keyboard that would allow a spacer between the two halves. This would make the laptop so much better ergonomically. I can also see this spacer being a Trackpoint module. Maybe even the two halves could be tilted! If only Nirav would make my dreams come true!

Let’s try to get this real ![]()
I don’t think this is what folks in this thread are looking for unless the screen can be tactile. That and you would have different power/connector requirements which I am not sure about how they would be resolved. A giant DS or 3DS with stylus does sound like a cool idea, though.
If you’re going to do ortholinear, might as well do split keyboard as that’s more comfortable, and if you’re going to have a large space between the keyboard halves, might as well put a screen there!
Data connection would be an issue though, yeah. Only usb2.0 is available.
That’s the idea, and make the lower end to also work as trackpad ![]()
Stylus… I prefer it to be tactile, but yes, it could be possible to use a stylus for better precision, like a small Wacom tablet.
I dream about it too.
Me too.
