Kubuntu 25.04 on the Framework Laptop 12

For Kubuntu, you can mostly follow the Ubunutu guide, with a couple extra steps. This may also be useful for other distros running KDE Plasma desktop environment.

Disk encryption

If you want full disk encryption, it’s available in the Kubuntu installer, but it is a small and easy to miss checkbox just above the bar chart on the disk partitions page

Auto-rotate fix

When applying the auto-rotate fix script, you’ll see a notice about an additional command needed before it will take effect: systemctl daemon-reload (or a full restart will work as well)

On-screen keyboard

The virtual keyboard has to be installed and configured manually

  1. sudo apt-get install maliit-keyboard
  2. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Virtual Keyboard and select Maliit

After several years of using a 2-in-1 (dell xps 13) on Ubuntu/Gnome, I gotta say KDE Plasma is a breath of fresh air. Framework should consider replacing vanilla Ubuntu as an official distro on the 12 because of the lackluster touch support.

A couple other settings I recommend:

Inverted touchpad scrolling

Touch mode (enlarged UI buttons) always enabled
