Linux suddenly lost my monitors on my dock

I have linux using Zorin 17 as my distro. (gnome ubuntu 23.10 based and wayland) on a framework 16 without the gpu module and with the 3.03 firmware.

It’s been working fine for weeks but suddenly yesterday it stopped working with my Kensington thunderbird 3 dock. As soon as I plug it in (either of the back ports) instead of turning on my 2 monitors my laptop screen goes black. After a few minutes the laptop screen comes back on and I can see it recognises the other screens are attached and it acts like they are there. But they show black. The dock works with my work thinkpad running ubuntu so there’s nothing wrong there. Since it used to work I’m wondering if it’s an OS update that’s broken it but not sure how to track it down.

Should add I tried rebooting, I tried taking the power and tb cable out of the dock to reset that. Tried turning the monitors off. Nothing made them work. I can however use anything connected by usb to the dock and get power through it.

If you open a terminal and type lsusb may we have the output of that before and after you plug in the dock?

Think I found the issue but not sure why it’s suddenly lost bandwidth or why an old thinkbook can outdo usb4. Is the port running as 3.0 maybe?

I noticed the same thing (dell Dock).
With HWE kernel 6.5.0-41 I am unable to actually have the screen working, and get lots of errors showing up on the USB-C part.
Booting the previous HWE kernel works: 6.5.0-35 through.
Try it out. I’m, on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with HWE kernels enabled.

Actually - had all kind of weird errors this morning with the stock ubuntu kernels.
Installed mainline 6.9.3 (had to disable secure boot) and now everything works again.

Note that I took the habit to actually disconnect my laptop from my dock for boot and login.
Only once the workscreen is available, do I plug in the usb-cable to the dock.

Maybe @Mario_Limonciello knows more about this?

You nailed it. I switched to 6.5.0-35-generic and it works again. I was also running 6.5.0-41 so it seems something in that kernel version doesn’t like the usb4 ports.

Yes. Took me a while to figure that one out.
Sadly, didn’t have time to open a case/bug report on that to the ubuntu kernels (too much on my plate at this time) - but it seems to be a regression if some kind.

You guys should open a bug report with Ubuntu kernel team to find the regression. If it is localized to Ubuntu and didn’t happen mainline they’re the only ones to solve it.

@Robert_Neve As you seem to have access to ubuntu one, could you report that 6.8.0 works nicely. There is a kernel exception showing at boot. But once I connect the USB-C to my Dock, I have an image straight on the external screen and it just works.

already contacted the guys in the IRC chat - so far no answer (for access to launchpad bugs).
