Just unboxed my 13 amd-ai-300 and found the microphone and camera kill switch to be inverted.
I would expect to not have an annoying red color in my eye sight when not using the mic/camera. When off, those should be normal color/not noticeable.
But when turned on, it should be clear/apparent that they are on and show red.
Instead it is inverted, with red showing when the devices are turned off. So it is always catching my eye. Not great, as I’ll forget they are turned on since no obvious indicator when on.
Also the mic switch is placed such that my finger smudges the camera when sliding it. Why is the switch placed in the middle of the sensors instead of fully to the left of the sensors.
Little disappointments. Something hopefully a replacement bezel in the future can address at least in regards to the indicator.
Lots of good things to though, enjoying it so far.
The color red for off and no color for on is industry standard. While I do not know why its this way, I assume its to grab your attention to where the switch is and reduce troubleshooting.
I believe the idea is that the majority of people are just not worried about malware or something potentially spying on them. So camera & mic on is the default state most people will just keep them in 24/7.
And people accidentally having switches off, not realizing, and thinking it’s broken, happens unfortunately. It will create a certain number of customer service inquires, which does cost money to answer. Better to have the off state be the one which calls a user’s attention to the switches.
Some people feeling the switches are backwards has come up before. If I recall, Framework staff commented that the way the switches are is intentional.
If I had to guess, I’d say bezels with the switch colors the other way around is unlikely to happen. They have a lot of bezel colors, they need to double the number they stock, just to have each with reverse switches. Stocking and fulfilling additional items does incur a cost.
If it bothers you enough, you could probably paint the indicators to be however you prefer.
