Hi Framework, i was thinking if instead of having the components accessible on the inside or top, what if evething was on the back?
Now days that is in trend splitting the m.2 and since 4.0 x2 is enough for most of the things, it will be easier to add more storage, I don’t know if AMD has bifurcation, but since n100 has it, I see it possible. And since its on the back people can just sprint a custom back cover, or 3er parties can make kits, for example for:
- the pice slots, warever they are
- more battery
- cooling
- 3rd party biffier gpus/ML computing/crazy dedicated cards for I don’t know, audio, RF. for the engineers that work on the field
- a 3rd party “expansion slots expansion” to add even more USB cards taking x1 like of the m.2 for each side and letting x2 for the nvme
On the cooling topic, it will allow not only people to make a custom cooling but also 3er parties, air or wc, for more silent operation in gaming, rendering, ML, warever puts the hw to the limits.
And having more cooling not only is less noise, it also is more performance.
I was also thinking, why not instead of sucking air directly from the outside, have the air intake at the front and thru the laptop (servers like) to also cool the nvme, mem and other components, that way I also can have the side effect of not having a warmer keyboard or body, or add a 3ert fan for the case, but that means sacrificing space so maybe not.
Having an intake at the front can also have the side effect of avoiding having the heatsink plugged, since it will be possible to have a mesh for filtering
I like the idea of moding mi devices, also thinking of having the option to upgrading it even more sounds nice, and can think that for the people looking for a mobile workstation that in theory can accept normal pcie devices can be interesting
Imagine m.2_1 split in x2x2 and the other in x1x1x1x1, that is a lot of storage, a biffier cooling double or triple the size with an extra tube to connect the quick release wc
I personally don’t care having a double-thick laptop if I am gonna have more
just think about it
