Previewing the Framework Wireless Touchpad Keyboard

man the fact it’s not backlit is a real bummer, the Logitech i have is back lit and discontinued and they go for BIG bucks, like $75 to $100 NOT working. if this was a backlit it would possibly be a killer keyboard and i’d buy 2 just because.

The mechanical CAD files are on the github.

Some measurements
Width: 357mm
Height: 118.65mm
Depth (front): 9.23mm
Depth (rear): 16.07mm

Depth might not be accurate since I was measuring bottom of the feet to top of the nearest keykap which are not flat. Should be around that 9mm/16mm measurement.

I really hope that that top right button is also a fingerprint reader!

I’m VERY interested in this. If this means that it’s an expansion card that has a USB-A port and the dongle built in, I’ll buy this immediately!

Anything like this should be located on our GitHub. If not available now, keep an eye out for future updates: GitHub - FrameworkComputer/Framework-Wireless-Touchpad-Keyboard: Documentation for the Framework Wireless Touchpad Keyboard · GitHub

In the LTT video, you can see what this currently looks like. Important to note, this may be changed before it is released.

thanks a lot looking forward to it.

Agree. This is the strength of traditional ThinkPad external keyboards; they will accept modules from laptops with compatible keyboards. In fact if you’re fine with a trackpoint in place of a trackpad, the SK-8855 and KT-1255 (if you need Bluetooth) are already perfect versions of the keyboard this new Framework product is trying to displace IMO.

Great idea this product. My use case is percisely as described in the LTT interview: Living room laptop for my dumb TV. I’ve been looking for years for an adequate replacement for my logitech k830i since these are increasingly difficult to find these days. That said I can’t find anything about the back light function which is, at least for the described use case an absolute deal breaker (not only for me I reckon).

Honestly, any couch keyboard should have backlit keys as a requirement.

I have been waiting for a product like this for so long and I was so excited when it was announced, but the lack of backlighting completely kills it for me. Please come out with a backlit version. I’m so sick of this cheap amazon keyboard.

One question for those of us that love mice: could I pair a mouse with the keyboard so that I could switch keyboard, touchpad and mouse between up to 4 devices?

KT-1255 user here, double agree.

In fact I came here to say the only killer feature these wireless travel keyboards never offer that I really wish they did was native wired USB mode. I have to plug into some older equipment on site sometimes that we just keep old junky wired keyboards laying around for. If I could plug a USB-C to A cable in and its just a generic keyboard I’d be happy. A working touchpad as an emulated mouse would be even better.

The PS/2 equipment is finally getting rare enough that I won’t ask for that.

And I won’t witness to the might and power of the trackpoint today and save us all the groans.

Sounds like you’re in the market for the “ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II”.

Yes all of this. Backlight is critical for me so I’ll probably wait until gen2 drops.

Question: What’s the difference between a product announcement, a preview, and something completely undisclosed? Specifically, what’s the bar between a preview and undisclosed?

I would love to get this if it had a Chrome layout option.

AS others have mentioned here, backlight is a must, but also keyboard layouts for other languages than English, in my case - Swedish.

FOUR simultaneously paired wireless devices? Plus a wired connection as well? Amazing! I want to buy this keyboard for sure!

I have a few questions:

  1. Will we be able to toggle to wireless devices while keeping the wired one connected? That essentially means I’m able to switch between five devices without having to mess with cables or dongles. That would be awesome.
  2. Can we please have full-size arrow keys? Just like Linus (one of your top five preferred investors  ), those tiny half-size arrow keys are very annoying to use and I end up mispressing them and cursing them every time I have to use those.
  3. Since the firmware is open-source… Can we expand it to pair to more than four devices? It would be great to have one keyboard pairing all devices in my home: desktop, laptop, work laptop, steam deck, phone, tablet, Android TV…
  4. Can we have a travel case for this keyboard? It looks compact enough that I want to put it in my backpack to bring with me while traveling.
  5. How long is the expected battery life? How long does it last in one charge?
  6. Can we use AA or AAA batteries? Those can potentially be more convenient and easier to replace, besides being quite cheap. Plus, there could be circuitry inside the keyboard to charge such batteries in-place.
  7. How’s the key rollover (AKA key ghosting)? You can even use my own tool to test it.

I have a few concerns:

  1. How’s the security of the wireless dongle? Logitech Unify and Lightspeed dongles were found vulnerable, several years ago. Some of the findings were fixed, but others were not.
  2. Some companies restrict the use of wireless devices, due to security concerns. We MUST have a wired connection for such cases.

This is amazing! Have a few questions about the USB dongle:

  • Will it be programmable?
  • Is it using the same nRF54 chip?
  • Will the firmware for the dongle be open source too?

And for the controller board, is there a plan to make a smaller version? Not sure what the dimensions are, but from the pics it looks quite long.
