Random hard freezes fw13 amd7840u win11

Yeah i’ll just say that if you run into this issue (and hopefully you don’t), you will definitely notice it because the computer will lock up and unfreeze every 15-30 seconds until any apps with hardware acceleration are closed. Reopen them and the freezes will continue.

Also okay, it seems in that case what I will do is DDU the current graphics drivers in safe mode and revert back to the Framework drivers, see if that stabilizes my display driver a bit.

And yeah, Firefox might have better battery life than Arc on Windows rn, but it is still imo one of the worst browers to use if you prioritize battery life, it drains the battery on both my Framework and MacBook, even taking into account the different operating systems and CPU architecture. I’ve found that Microsoft Edge delivers the best battery life on the Framework, but I also do not like Edge and it’s bloated amount of features I never use, so there’s that lol.

In my experience, while the AMD Ryzen 7 7840u 13 battery life is not the best, it is still far and away better than the i7-1165G7, even before i upgraded my battery to the 61 wh one.

I have honestly lost track at this point. If I recall correctly, about 2 weeks ago I freshly installed the Framework drivers then installed the AMD drivers on top of that.

Just wanted to chime in that I’ve also had a few of these DPC_WATCHDOG blue screens on a month old DIY Ryzen 7640u version (didn’t upgrade up from anything, everything is new and all of the components are from framework except for my SSD). Had this happen on Windows 10 and now Windows 11 (thinking me using an unsupported W10 was the culprit ). I’ve only installed the drivers from framework too.

Skimming this thread some it looks like an upcoming BIOS update might fix it? Anything I can do to help the debug process here?

A beta version of that bios is out that supposedly fixes the issue. We’re kinda community testing at this point to see if that’s the case.

Process for that is just seeing if no more BSODs like this occur, and that no new bugs surface from this (given its a beta).

I am in the absolute latest AMD drivers, including both “recommended” and “optional”, last checked just now, and I haven’t seen this issue happen to me.

I installed the beta bios and the latest AMD drivers and only used my fw13 with the touchpad over the weekend. No freezes so far. Fingers crossed that the problem with the touchpad is fixed.

Just had a freeze on the beta BIOS :sob::sob::sob:

Didn’t result in BSOD, just hung for a few minutes

that sounds like the issues i was having with ram, i would verify that its infact not the ram by getting a cheap “supported” 8gb kit on ebay

It is not a ram issue how many times do we have to say that.

Not sure if anyone else has had this symptom. So previously, the trackpad having a little glitch would cause a BSOD. So I still get these stutters but no BSOD, not ideal but better.

I have a whole new symptom, where my keyboard randomly does other key presses and most of the keyboard doesn’t work, almost as if a key combination is being held. Hitting the Windows Key snaps it out of it. Not sure if it’s related, but it wasn’t a symptom before the BSOD days. Nothing related in the Windows logs

Haven’t had that issue myself. Is it like ghosting?

My only keyboard gripe has been double keystrokes sometimes, but I don’t know if that’s a keyboard thing or my fingers doing it.

The bios update seemed to fix it for literally everyone else I’m just giving you suggestions no need to be a jerk.

yeah so far i’ve downgraded the drivers back to the Framework drivers and I didn’t run into the weird freezing I did a few days ago, but if it comes back, RAM will be the next thing I’ll have to look into replacing.

The full freezes seem to be gone after updating to the beta bios. But now I have random crashes of the graphic drivers it seems (amduw23g in the Event Viewer of Win11). Screen goes Black and even some Programs crash.

This is so frustrating because I was evaluating the Laptop for Corporate use but in this state of firmware and drivers it is just a nogo. At the moment I am considering switching back to an AMD Thinkpad cause with an older L14 I had zero problems. As a Framework User from the first model with Intel Chip and now upgrading to the AMD Model, it makes me actually really sad, because I love the idea behind the company.

Completely agree, it would become a support nightmare. I love what they do, love how they’re bringing something new but it’s not mass-market ready. From the issue existing in the first place to how it was handled, it’s been poor. Like you, my experience with AMD powered laptops has been positive to now.

That said, I hope it’s a learning exercise for them and something that won’t be repeated again. I’m glad I can actually start enjoying using the thing instead of loosing my shit for crashes, but while I’m getting the experience now that I hoped for on day one, I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, anytime soon

My trackpad keeps stuttering and it doesn’t seem to be related to the Arc beta (at least part of the times), since it also happens while the app is closed.

I have also had to use the AMD Cleanup Utility to purge all AMD drivers and reinstall the Framework ones since the screen, keyboard and fingerprint lights (basically every indicator that the laptop is turned on) would turn off for a second and then come back and repeat over a few seconds, like flickering. No evidence of this on Event Viewer nor in the Reliability Monitor in the Control Panel.

Since reinstalling the drivers the trackpad stutters occasionally, sometimes going fully crazy from one side of the screen to the other, but, otherwise, it works (relatively) smoothly.

So what’s the general consensus here, the new beta BIOS DOES resolve the bsod problems, but there is still instability within the graphics drivers, and freezing?

In my personal experience, I have had quite a few BSODs, so I decided to upgrade my BIOS to the beta version. There was a bit of freezing in games afterwards and some hang as i tried to alt tab out of it. If the issue still occurs then I’ll probably need to switch machines until they patch it completely.

The issue is kind of disappointing, but I really hope they can get their act together like they did with the intel lineup. Looking forward to a complete fix and more reliable AMD frameworks I guess?

Installing the beta firmware update seems to have sorted the issue for me - no freezes in two days.

Yeah… it seems to be bursts of freezes for me, I had 3 freezes within 4 days almost a month ago, and it was then alright until today when I got one and decided to something about it with the new bios… We’ll see over the next few months i guess.

I had my last 5 laptops fail even more spectacularly (all within a year) so this one I guess is the best one so far.

Hi everyone. I’ve not had a BSOD since applying the update. I applied it immediately when I saw Stephen Wright’s message on this thread (thanks). I still occasionally experience the freezing / pausing in Windows 11 on battery when using trackpad. Generally when watching YouTube, could be a coincidence. Also - once only since update - had the trackpad not work at all on resuming from sleep issue.

For me still here for the journey, still like this laptop and love the mission. In fairness I don’t use this device for work currently. I wouldn’t yet trust it for work but hopefully we get there!

Thanks to those in the background grafting away to resolve this. Cheers all!
