Recommendations for a EGPU enclosure to use

I own a framework 13, 13th gen I5 and was noticing that my GPU performance wasn’t doing too well. I’ve been looking into EGPUs and couldn’t find any that looked very good (with my small knowledge of EGPUs of course). Does anybody have any recommendations of EGPU’s that work well with framework laptops?

Well a great advice would be to take a look at egpu.io.
I myself use a ADT-Link UT3G as it is the fastest USB4 eGPU Adapter and it is working fine with my FW16. But the Intel Devices use Thunderbolt and will not be as compatible with the UT3G regarding full use of the Interface. You can use any Thunderbolt eGPU Dock you can get your Hands on but price and featurrwise the “TH3P4G3” on aliexpress should be the best Advice.
Also the Adapter diesnt matter that much, but what GPU do you want to use in there?
If you do not already own a GPU, a GPD G1 could be a great Device.

bare in mind it’s PCIe gen3, so 4 lanes give you 32Gbps transfer max. I’m not sure about 13th gen intel specifically mentioned in the OP, but it’s worth checking if it is possible to get full 40Gbps transfer using a gen4 eGPU link.

BTW I really really hope future Framework 13" mobos will have a second M.2 slot, so we can put oculink there… pretty please?

Every eGPU enclosure is pcie3 except the adt-link UT3G USB4 or most of the oculink Adaptors.
Every thunderbolt3/4 eGPU is most definitly pcie3 and they are only using 22gbps of the Thunderbolt Connection for getting Data into the GPU the rest is reserved for Datareturn and Utils like usb a/c on the Device.

I’ve a 12th-gen FW13 with Linux, not the 13th-gen, but I can say I’ve been really happy of my Razer Core X.

I use it with a RTX 3090 Ventus.

wow, so newer intel chips still have this ridiculous 22Gbps limit? I assumed it was long gone by now… boy oh boy, intel really do suck…

Yes they have. There is only one Adapter with an USB-C Port which is using pcie 4x4 and its the ADT-Link UT3G i am using. Every other is running the GPU in pcie3x4 and Thunderbolt is always reserving the 10gbps for the Return Connection as it is not running a PCIE Tunnel.

I have a Sonnet 550 and a Razer Core eGPU enclosures. I have used both with my i5-11th main board, but only the Sonnet with my current i5-13th daily driver. Other than Nvidia driver silliness, both enclosures worked fine (albeit not crazy performant of course), charged the Framework, etc.
