Rollcall, FW16 Gen2. Lets hear 1st impressions. The good..the bad..and the ugly

I think there are enough out there now in the hands of Users to collect some 1st impressions.

I start..

Current Laptop: Lenovo Legion 5 17IMH05 (17’ size), CPU Intel Core i7 2.60GHz, Graphics GeForce GTX 1650 Ti, HDD 500GB, 16GB RAM, Display Resolution: 1920x1080.

New Laptop: FW16 DIY, CPU Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, Graphics: Internal AMD Radeon™ 890M, HDD1 2230 500GB, HDD2 2280 1TB, 64GB RAM, Display Resolution: 2560x1600.

Packaging is brilliant. No glossy photos required, we all know what’s in the box. There is so much space around all the items that it would require quite a bit of damage, before it would impact the internal items.

No nicks, no dints, no colour issues. 1st impression was of a high quality product. (Spoiler alert, that impression has not changed). As a retired Electronic/Telecommunication Technician, this unit was assembled with due diligence.

Comparison:

Size: The FW16 is nowhere near as thick as my Legion. It’s also not as deep or wide.

Screen size: Both have the same height while the Legion is a lot wider (which is where it gets its 17’ size from.

Screen Flex: The FW16 is plenty stiff enough. Yes, the Legion is slightly stiffer, but also has a far thicker screen frame.

Keyboard: Mine is 100% fine. Minimum flex and the same feel as my Legion, or my previous Work Dells/Thinkpads…etc

Touchpad: Yes, my spacers have a bit of a ridge towards the keyboard side, but no gap at all, nor movement between the touchpad and the spacers. So no trapped underarm hair or any other issues, making it feel uncomfortable.
Fans: They are running, but I can’t hear them during normal operation. On par with my Legion.

Heat: Well…she gets a bit warm underneath, but only while using Win11-Pro. It runs a lot cooler using Fedora KDE.

Conclusion of physical unit: I am pleasantly surprised by the quality, having read so much about all the “issues” that simply don’t exist on mine. This being the most expensive Laptop I have ever purchased to date, its thumps up from me. No regrets.
