Framework 16 pro coming?

it would be nice to also have a fw 16 pro with also the new cpu and the “macbook pro for linux” in mind, with a new bottom cover for a larger battery (then we can finally have a non apple laptop with a very good battery) new speakers etc… becuz in the past if you wanted a workhorse you would go with fw 16 but now with the fw13 pro its imbalanced the fw16 pro would bring the balance back

I’ll second that. I rather expect Framework to update the FW16 to at least the same capabilities as the '13 in six months or a year though. Don’t like having to wait, of course – I’ve wanted a larger battery since I first bought it – but I think I can manage.

The FW 16 is pretty young, I wouldn’t necessarily expect a Pro version anytime soon. I’d love to be proven wrong though

In what way? CPU/iGPU are not the latest and DDR5 is not as fast, but both those things could be improved without any chassis changes.

16 speakers are already side firing and if you run Easy Effects or whatever DSP is on Windows, they can actually sound better than MBP speakers (srsly, it is a joy to listen to music with the right effects chain)

You can get way more storage into the 16, dGPUs, numpad/macropad/etc, 2 or 3 more ports, higher power limits, more RAM, oculink, and a bigger battery even than the 13 Pro…

So if you want a workhorse you still want a 16 imo

That said, obviously the 16 will continue to evolve and get updates that improve efficiency/performance/whatever. I just think it still offers a lot over the 13 Pro and is a long way from needing a whole new chassis, especially since the haptic/one-piece touchpad is coming this year

The chassis upgrade is the one thing I’m interested in from the 13 Pro to be honest. Mine flexes quite a lot, in part due to the extra weight I’ve put onto it, sure, but I can lift one corner of the device up significantly before the other corners start to rise into the air. The bending and twisting is quite visible. Granted, it hasn’t been an issue, but it would be a nice upgrade, and watching my battery/motherboard bend like that is slightly uncomfortable.

On my work laptop, it’s impossible to lift less than 2 corners at a time.

I hope they’ll hold the update until LPDDR6X arrives and provide a case for the old motherboard just like the one for the 13.

I’m actually satisfied with the 7840HS’es performance, but that Ultra X7 motherboard release gave me hope that we could finally get serious battery life in the 16 eventually.

Same, I’m also pretty happy with the performance. The 12hours of battery I get is also pretty decent, but it’s not yet quite in “chuck it in a bag and don’t bother checking if I remembered the cable” territory. My chromebook back in the day was like that, the battery lasted 2 weeks.

Definitely needs a chassis update. I’ve had frequent issues with picking up the laptop by one corner causing trackpad clicks, or interruption of connection to the trackpad.

I’m probably going to try replacing the trackpad with the new one-piece unit, so maybe that will help. But there’s no question that the chassis flexes more than I like.

Luckily we’re getting some of the improvements as parts, since the one-piece touchpad for the FW16 is haptic.

Personally I would love a chassis like the FW13 Pro for my FW16 since it currently has a bit of a sharp/harsh design. Speakers don’t affect me that much tho since I’m a headphones user. Performance & battery life is already pretty good, since when I was on a 5-6hr flight I could debug & compile big C++ projects in VS2022 for the entire duration of the flight, and I still had battery life to spare when we landed (iirc about 20-30%?)

It would also be nice/cool if there was a keyboard option that’s like what Dell used to have with their latitude laptops:

What option is that ?

Incorporating a trackpoint is something that they’re trying and it’s definitely on their list :

I would love a 16" version of the Framework Laptop 13 Pro - the same chassis as the 13 Pro, but bigger. In other words, something that looks like a 16" MacBook Pro :slightly_smiling_face: even it meant we couldn’t have the expansion bay.

I’m on board with this request! While the Framwork 13 Pro looks great, I’m a bit concerned about the screen size. My experience with development systems has always been 16 inches, like my Dell Precision 16 for work. Another thing that worries me is the keyboard size, as my hands tend to be on the larger side. Since there’s no way to “try” the laptop in a local store, it’s tough to justify spending $3,000 on a system that might not be a perfect fit. I’d love to hear from anyone on a 13 Pro coming from a 16" laptop like Dell XPS or Precision.

I believe most laptop have similar key spacing, about 19 mm, provided it isn’t a sub-compact laptop which just can’t fit a proper full size keyboard.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the Framework 13, 13 Pro and 16 have the same or nearly same key spacing. The 16 just has the option for a number pad or macro pad.

~edit~
Looks like Framework laptops do use standard 19mm key spacing.

The keyboard has 1.5mm key travel and full 19mm key spacing just like our laptops.

16 pro would be great, mostly

  • CNC-chassis
  • Touchscreen
  • maybe option for better thermals, (if that is not taken care automatically with more efficient CPUs)
