Routes to better battery life

Hi All,

I was just looking at the comments section of a few of the Framework Pro 13 videos and wanted to put some of my thinking down, as some of it annoyed me.

One of the great things about having an upgradeable laptop is you can choose what you want to upgrade. Sounds obvious, but everyone’s reasons for an upgrade mean people will upgrade different parts of the laptop at different times.

For instance, I want to have better battery life, and now that the 13 Pro has come out, I have two very different upgrade paths. I could: get the new 74Wh battery, but that means I need the new bottom cover, speakers, and I believe, input cover; or I could get the new Ultra 5 325 mainboard and some LPCAMM2 memory (only 16GB) and sell my AMD 7040 and ddr5 ram (32GB, the memory downgrade would be fine for me based on what I do on the laptop).

Crunching the numbers, I think the board upgrade would give me a longer screen-on time than the battery upgrade, give me better gaming performance (I have not searched out any articles to confirm), and would be cheaper. Total board upgrade £250, battery upgrade £425, selling old parts.

I love my framework 13 and upgrading seems way cheaper to me than buying a new laptop every few years, but that is probably because I am happy with ‘good enough’ and don’t need ‘the latest and greatest’.

Anyone else want to share their cheap upgrade/repair stories?

When considering the board upgrade, keep in mild that you will also need new LPCAMM2 memory on that board, and prices are sky high. The only reason I could afford it was buying Crucial 32 GB memory back in April for ~$200 before stock ran out when Crucial exited the market. Now Framework is the only retail supplier of LPCAMM2 memory, and their supplier has spiked prices. 32 GB of LPCAMM2 from Framework is currently $800!
