I just got one of the $400 US shells to go along with my refurb 11gen intel board today. Unfortunately, while attempting to remove the battery the RTC battery housing just lifted up and came off of the mainboard.
I can still power on and use the laptop like normal, which is decent as this is just a backup system, but I’d like to know if Framework’s permanent solution would still most likely be able to work in the mainboard’s current state. I don’t believe any pads ripped up with this removal. Worst case I can just go buy another board, but I would be hoping that a decent electronics repair shop could fix this.
Assuming that no pads ripped this is an relatively easy solder job. If you have the right equipment, hotplate, tweezers, and solder, this might be something you could try to fix yourself as the risk of screwing it up is somewhat low.
Thanks for the reply. It’s been out of warranty for a bit now as it purchased it when they announced the refurb 11gen program a while ago. If they can send me the hardwire kit I can have someone do it. It does look like an easy solder job but I’m a complete novice so I’d rather take it to a repair shop.
Their should be no issue installing the modification kit, unless I have misunderstood something completely.
You should be able to get a modification kit, you might have to be clear that you have experienced issues with the rtc repeatedly.
I don’t know what repair shops charge in your area, but I would be concerned that the rework might cost more then the board is worth. always nice to see something not going to waste though.
