Just saw this topic; mine has also split open and is fraying at the plug (cable that came with my 1360P) - is the general census still to just contact support?
A while ago I got myself a really nice Club3D 240W charge cable. It’s pretty good and bright orange too so people notice it. CAC-1573 is the model no. Not expensive.
Hi everyone,
I am having the exact issue most people here have had. The straight end of my USB-C charging cable is fraying where the plug and cable meet. I purchased my Framework 13 (Intel 13th gen) laptop in June 2023. As recommended in this post, I have reached out support. I have not yet received a response but am confident they will help me.
I posted here mainly to add additional feedback to this topic.
Just thought I’d share some more horror pictures (viewer discretion is advised) :,) - No matter how much I wrap it with electrical tape, it just finds its way out from under it. I’ll probably wait till it fails completely then replace it. (Or keep wrapping it and just making one giant taped cable XD )
Just for context - my cable gets wrapped up, thrown in my bag, and unwrapped at least once or twice a day. So this is after roughly a year or so of hard use. Ngl, a little disappointed by how flimsy the cable is - but like someone else mentioned, at least its not hard wired!
As mentioned several times in this thread, this is a defect. Framework will replace this for you.
I don’t know when they listed it but there is a cable only option on the marketplace now that is just $9. Ordered a new one to replace my old one (and a really bad ugreen one that I picked up when my old one started splitting)
Update: After this replacement also split, I gave up on Framework cables. I bought an Anker USB-C cable and that’s been working just fine.
Seems so, some official comment on the continuation of this issue might be a good idea.
imagine if people had listened to the guy telling people to “stop sharing your experiences and just open a support ticket” we would be in the dark about how endemic an issue it still is.
3rd one
To provide some more data this finally happened to mine on the 90 degree end that was being used for the laptop after 2.5 years (original batch 2)
Hey all,
I’m writing this post to basically report and perhaps even make a suggestion for the PSU cables, particularly the USBC cable for the 60w PSU. Right now I’m in the Dominican Republic, heat has been very present at about 80c on average. I have noticed that the USBC part of the cable is getting these “tears” I assume due to the heat. Meanwhile my USBC JSAUX red cable or any of my chargers (for my Lenovo Thinkpad T480, phone chargers, etc) have not been getting that. Now i know these cables are for delivering 60w and that may play a factor (combining the heat) but my suggestion is to, in the future, perhaps make some type of shielding for the plastic? maybe use a different type of material? so this can be avoided. I have attached pictures.
Thank You!
I fixed this problem on my cable using some heat shrink tubing (bought on amazon) to cover the split ends. In particular, I used 5/8" diameter tubing to get over the straight end usb connector. Slide the piece of tubing (cut to an appropriate length) over the straight-end connector, then down the length of the cable when fixing the right-angle end. The tubing I used had a 4:1 shrink ratio, but 3:1 might(?) work too.
I don’t think mechanical wear or ambient temperature have much to do with this. I just noticed that the sheath is split and peeling on mine (purchased Feb 2023) both at the right-angle end and at a random spot near the brick – even though the cable is essentially never unplugged, the laptop never moved from its home, and both ends lie flat and supported. It’s straight up defective material that starts to disintegrate over time, quite possibly just due to air exposure.
It’s pretty weird that manufacturing defects around this were known to the company in mid 2022 at the latest, yet they kept selling bad product at least as late as my purchase.
Don’t post much here but just saw this thread before logging out.
I wanted to say that I have an original batch 13" and have had 2 of these cables split since then, despite not moving them around much (it’s not like I travel with them every day or even move my laptop around much).
Although a tiny bit annoying, both times Framework replaced both cables 100% free of any charges (including $0 shipping) in a prompt and professional manner even though I was well out of warranty by that time.
This is why i keep recommending this company. Mistakes happen but the way they rectify them is beyond pretty much any company I’ve ever dealt with.
My next laptop will be a Framework without any doubt. I wish they made phones and other electronics too.
Cheers all.
Hi all,
here comes another degradation victim. This is the one that came with my Framework Laptop 13, labelled FRANBQPHA, actually it was included with a second charger I added as part of the order. This one has been in active use only very little but sat in a place that was exposed to the sun at least the first half of the day whenever the sun was shining, for about a year.
Looks like the sleeving material cannot stand UV light! Later cables use a different material that is more shiny and a bit tacky whereas this one has a matte finish with a silky touch. As I have learned from many devices having a matte surface, the chemistry behind that is far from perfect and will degenerate sooner or later. It may be the same here.
Well, It’s far behind its warranty period and easily replaced with any other USB-C cable capable of 65W power delivery. So no worries, just wanted to say that I’m in…
I’ll try to use shrink wrap tube to fix these places but probably more damaged places will add to it over time. The cable is perfectly usable though, there is no damage to the actual wiring or the shield.
Cheers,
Joe
I don’t think it is UV light causing this. I’ve got an October 2021, Batch 5, Framework 13", and I’ve kept my Framework inside. Extremely light use, I kept it in its original box and in storage for most of the past three years, RTC battery failed sometime back due to lack of use and I haven’t replaced it, yet.
My cable is now suffering the same splitting, and I can discern no other reason than age.
