I have a USB-C to HDMI adapter (male to female), and it only detects an external display if I plug that adapter on the top left expansion card, the one used to power the laptop and that has the LED next to it.
Obviously, that is not convenient: the laptop is discharging while the external display is in use.
The adapter works well on a Mac, so I don’t think it has a defect. I will try to add its model etc. to the post anyway.
Are the other USB-C expansion card (slots) limited in some ways?
- Framework 16
- AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics
- NixOS
Sorry if I posted in the wrong place. I meant to post under Community Support, but the New Post placeholder instructed me to post under Linux instead.
See here: Expansion Card Slot functionality on Framework Laptop 16
You should be able to use slots 1,2,4,5 for charging and slots 1,2,4 for display output. So even if you use the top left slot (slot 1) for display output, you should be able to charge through three other ports.
If these ports don’t work as intended, the laptop might be defect and you should talk to support.

I seem to be having a very similar issue. I had an ancient monitor which worked fine with the HDMI module in slot 2. I got a new monitor and wanted to use the DP module in that slot instead and now neither work in that slot. Being a complete and utter noob when it comes to Linux (I installed Bazzite), I thought I was missing something, but the DP module works fine in slot 4.
I’m kind of hesitant to raise a support ticket though - I’d rather not be without my laptop for weeks and I’m in the UK so it’s likely going to be a while if I do have to return it. Is there something I can do to.. re-initialise the modules in slot 2? Or did I do something wrong in hot-swapping the modules which I thought was possible since they are just USB-C devices?
Thank you! The link is very helpful. It’s working perfectly.
In my experience with other hardware issues, I suggest contacting support ASAP.
They will ask you to perform many checks (and take many pictures) before considering sending a replacement part. Also, there’s a good chance they will send a replacement part (like the midplate) without you having to send the whole machine. Good luck.
