SSD recommendations

I have been thinking of putting a WD SN740 2tb SSD in my DIY edition.

I read here that it gets quite hot though. Should that be a concern?
What are you guys using? I don’t own one yet, so I can buy whatever, but cheap is always nice obviously.

I am using an SB-2130-1TB, the same part that I intalled in my Steam Deck.

I bought a Crucial P310 2TB ready for when it arrives. Got it for £130 which is about £40 cheaper than the WD SN770 here, and under half the Framework price for 2TB.

I tend to buy Crucial for all my SSDs. So far I’ve only had one very early SATA 64GB SSD go into read-only mode on me. All my other ones have been solid.

One piece of advice. If you’re going to be saving big files often or will have less than 16GB RAM and care about longevity, do NOT get a QLC drive. Ensure that it uses TLC flash, not QLC. A telltale sign of a drive using QLC is a lower price point than other drives with the same physical and digital size.

The benefit of QLC flash is that you get more storage for cheaper, but its downside is that it doesn’t last as long as TLC, because you can’t write to the flash as much. The more files you save and the more your system relies on swap memory, the more durability is used. This is an inherent behavior of all consumer SSDs today. TLC drives will have higher durability, but again, they will be more expensive per GB of space.

The one that the original poster linked to does use TLC so that’s good.

I am staying away from WD SSDs.
I had a SN750 but it drains the battery in my framework 13 in sleep mode.
I changed to a SN770 and then found that this SSD randomly delete files.
And then I changed to a SK hynix Gold P31 and it has been running fine for 2 years.

I am going with a Crucial P310 for my framework 12.

Would be interesting if someone could test that on the FW12.

On my side, Corsair MP600 Mini 2TB SSD works great so far.

I just purchased Corsair MP300 M.2 2230 NVME 2TB SSD for my upcoming FW12 intel laptop. This one is from year 2024 chipset: Phison E27T, 162Layer Kioxia TLC specifically and NOTE the newer model which is QLC. Seem they share the same model name, fyi.

Tomshardware (Corsair MP600 Mini E27T 3D TLC):

On Amazon (description: Corsair MP600 Mini 2TB M.2 NVMe PCIe x4 Gen4 SSD – M.2 2230 – Up to 7,000MB/sec Sequential Read – High-Density 3D TLC NAND – Great for Steam Deck and Microsoft Surface – Black):

Thanks all and especially for the knowledge base tip on the subject of TLC Vs QLC (thanks twisted_nematic57).

Also purchased Crucial DDR5-5600 SODIMM 1x48GB (CT48G56C46S5) from Amazon. Framework RAM compatibility chart says ‘OK - Limited Validation’

Yes I agree, with one of the poster above. RAM and SSD are indeed cheaper on Amazon Vs from Framework at order.

Per Framework order details, expecting my sage color FW12 to be shipped end of this (Q3) quarter.

Cheers!
