Out of curiosity (for a potential Framework related personal project), what side do you prefer your 3.5mm audio jack if you use it normally (e.g. earbuds or a headset)?
Do you prefer it be on the left or right side of your laptop (not just Frameworks!) if given the option and why?
I primarily ask this with Framework 16 users in mind, like myself, however I’m also curious at folks’ preferences in general. Including Framework 13 users and non Framework laptops too.
I don’t keep the 3.5" audio module in the machine when I’m not using it. I prefer one USB-A and five USB-C modules, with my spare modules (presently a 2.5Gbps network module, an HDMI adapter module, and the 3.5" module) in my computer bag since I only need them on occasion. When I connect the system to power, I use the back connector on whichever side is most convenient to the plug; if I need another connection of any type, I’ll generally make it on the same side as the power cable, unless there’s a reason to put it on the opposite side.
(I may change that setup slightly once I get the full-sized SD card adapter, which I’ll be ordering in a couple weeks. I use SD cards fairly regularly, so unless there’s a good reason not to – like idle power consumption – I’ll probably keep it in the machine at all times.)
[EDIT: after thinking about it, I guess I have a slight preference for the right-hand side if there’s no power cable connected, and thus no reason to prefer either one. Probably just because that’s where it was on my long-time previous laptop. I’ll cast my vote for that.]
Me too, though I am not entirely sure why. I tend to move the more used io to the left side to get away from the mouse but I guess I tend to use earbus when not using a mouse and bt headphones when using one.
Not a strong preference though.
More bothered about the better non usb-4 port being on the right on the amd 13 XD.
Right side because I’m right-handed and the small, angled audio connector doesn’t interfere (much) with the mouse. Thus, ports on the left side remain free for bigger occupants. This is on my FW 16, if the jack were a part of the main body, either side is okay, but should be near the front.
It’s been a long time since I’ve used wired headphones. I think my old laptop had it on the right (honestly I don’t remember and would have to look). If I did use an audio jack I’d probably put it on the left so I could hook up some speakers or something to it. The wired headphones I use to use have a 90 so it wouldn’t really be in the way. I’d say my preference would probably be on the right though if using wired headphones. That way with my left hand on WASD and my right hand on the mouse the wires would go straight to the right side of the laptop rather than going over or under my left arm to plug into the left side of the laptop.
Headphones with single cables put them on the left ear cup. Also my headphones mostly don’t have small 90-degree ends on them, so, they do stick out enough that it makes a difference mouse-wise.
