I’m running Archlinux running kernel version 6.16.1-arch1-1 with BIOS version 3.4. I’m regularly getting full system freezes that may or may not be kernel panics. I have kdump setup to dump kernel logs to my efi partition and it works when I trigger a kernel panic with SysRq+C although it does not work when I get these random kernel panics. Sometimes the Caps Lock key will start blinking and other times the screen just flashes and whatever audio was playing starts looping, in both cases the magic SysRq doesn’t work. The kernel panics seem to happen more often when I set my system to performance mode with the power profiles daemon so I’m think that the processor may be bad. I tested my RAM with Memtest86+ and received a fully passing score.
Here is an example of the graphical glitches I get when my system freezes:
I’ll probably open a support ticket as well, but I thought I’d mention I’ve had a similar problem recently. I don’t have the same graphical garbage on my screen. Instead the screen will briefly flicker, then the caps lock key will start flashing. When it happens I’ll notice that it’s a little warm and the fan comes on. Nothing brings it out except for a hard reset with the power button. Today it actually froze while I was in UEFI and the screen went blank.
I’d love to find out how your issue was resolved if you don’t mind.
I meant to respond here when the support ticket was closed but I was able to fix my system by swapping my XMP enabled ram for some non-XMP-ram. One trick that worked in the interim before I got new RAM though was to set my system to power saver in linux to reduce the number of kernel panics.
I wanted to mention that this sounded RAM related.
When I first got my FW 12 I was having kind of similar issues. The GPU requires system RAM to allocate for itself. If there are problems the GPU would be one of the first to have symptoms.
