[TRACKING] AMD, Fedora 39 Beta and Firefox

This is a really interesting issue. Firmware 3.03 fixed all of the blocky issues for me, but I still had the random stuttering in vp9-encoded YouTube videos (used the h264ify extensions to A/B test videos). Didn’t see anything obvious in the logs and couldn’t figure out how to reproduce it consistently until reading this post. Sure enough, using any Bluetooth audio device causes vp9 videos to stutter in Firefox every time. Switching audio output to internal speakers makes the stutter stop instantly.

Went through the steps above to enable the rpmfusion multimedia codecs/drivers. No change in stuttering, but Firefox looks like it’s at least loading the driver properly.

Finally went and added amd_iommu=off kernel option. That has fixed the YouTube stuttering completely as far as I can tell. Still not sure if this is a Firefox issue or a kernel/mesa issue since I could never trigger the stuttering anywhere but Firefox.

I moved to rawhide with Plasma and xxmitsu/mesa-git added, using firefox from fedora rpm and have not encountered this issue since. No other kernel tuning with the 3.03 firmware.

Just as a followup. The environment variable did appear to help some and make firefox a bit smoother but the issue does come back even with it from time to time.

I have yet to be able to repro this on my end. Fedora 39, fully up to date, running Firefox provided with Fedora and updated.

That’s interesting I cannot seem to get away from it.

Also have an issue where going full screen will go all white.
But I also have this issue sometimes waking up at the login screen.

All,

Just to make sure we’re all on the same setup:

  • Fully update from Beta. Should be on release now.

  • Fully updated system, sudo dnf update.

  • Firefox release provided by the default installation. Meaning RPM installed by default, not flatpak.

  • Internal display only or with an external display attached.

I think this belongs here; Vanilla/default Firefox (rpm) installation on up-to-date F39, no rpmfusion (so no hw acceleration). Kernel command line has these added from defaults:

rtc_cmos.use_acpi_alarm=1 amdgpu.sg_display=0

Playing almost any youtube video (this one is fun) will almost immediately result in a journal spam of:

Important edit: In addition to the errors, the video (but not the audio) will very visibly stutter and drop frames.

kernel is latest available as of now, 6.5.11-300.fc39.x86_64.

This may not be correct, from the about:support FF tab:

FWIW again this is using as-installed defaults for FF from the official repos.

Another edit for info, from the same tab:

If you want to get full usage out of your desktop, I generally recommend enabling the third party repos during install. It provides a limited a subset of rpmfusion, Chrome and PyCharm repos. So no need to fully enable rpmfusion in its entirety, but the prompt to enable third party repos is generally what I use.

So my comparison will be done with this enabled as the only reason not to is for distribution, patents and other related stuff.

  • Fresh install.
  • Updated, rebooted, matching kernel.
  • Ran and rebooted
sudo grubby --update-kernel=ALL --args="rtc_cmos.use_acpi_alarm=1 amdgpu.sg_display=0"
  • Opened Firefox, ran the youtube video (great choice btw, they did a nice job!)

  • Ran full screen, Firefox capturing with journalctl -f and also ran dmesg afterward.

  • Not able to locate the same error. Also did not notice any dropped frames. Ran over my provided mediatek wifi card.

  • My codec information reflects what you’re seeing as well.

  • This was tested without anything attached, no external displays, etc.

Things to try?

  • Enable as shown here, then reboot. (Again, we’re merely trying to match my config.)

  • List anything attached, enable as shown above, detach anything attached (docks/hubs, external displays, etc), try again for troubleshooting.

I don’t have the third-party rpmfusion repos enabled (but they seem to be about NVidia drivers and Steam, so not relevant?)

Otherwise I think I’m in line with your set up. I also should have mentioned that I have:

  • 64GB RAM (2x32 Framework/ADATA 5600)
  • GAME_OPTIMIZED selected in the BIOS.

I tried playing the video again once or twice. I could see stutter, but not the errors. Then, hours later into the same boot, I saw something on reddit about the possibility that Google is “injecting” dropped frames when an ad blocker is detected. Sounded a bit like an urban legend but I tried anyway.

This time, I almost immediately got a freeze of the video, lots of errors (pasted below - looks like a GPU reset) and the displays (internal and external over HDMI) going dark for a few seconds. Then only the external one came back up, but frozen. I had to long-press the power button to reboot.

Relevant journal entries of the errors and GPU reset:

This is highly possible. YT is doing creative things as of late. Try disabling this extension to better match my config, vanilla Firefox, no extensions enabled. Try again.

Regarding JavaScript code snippets for non-Chromium family browsers? I laughed so hard during lunch that I almost sprayed it out.

All of these criteria meet my system.

I have also gotten some “Firefox cannot play this video errors.” While chrome flatpack can. I’m assuming it is because I do not have some codecs installed from RPMFusion.

I do not think all of these video issues are related to youtube only and because google is hindering the playback performance on Firefox.

In the screenshot I posted above, I will get a white screen when I full screen videos on youtube, but also sometimes on the login screen.

I’m also seeing this in dmesg:

From a terminal can you do

sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

Then all the steps here:

https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/Multimedia

If you’ve already enabled rpmfusion it won’t hurt to redo it.

Ffmpeg and mesa-va-drivers in base fc39 include problematic mainline upstream patches. The rpm fusion versions are patched to fix the upstream changes which break things. So it’s important to run through the dnf swap for the -freeworld versions of these (as per the how-to linked above)

Meaning they’re doing creative things with adblockers and I have seen side effects in casual viewing reported by folks.

I agree, this is not the browser. Please give this a try as @jwp indicated:

I second @jwp 's solution, vp9 playback is no longer choppy after running these commands:

sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
sudo dnf swap mesa-va-drivers mesa-va-drivers-freeworld
sudo dnf swap mesa-vdpau-drivers mesa-vdpau-drivers-freeworld

Update: Never mind. Had a few VP9 videos play fine, but then one wigged out so bad that it crashed my gnome session. Not had this issue on X11 so far, so I’m just switching to that when watching youtube as a temporary workaround.

Installing the freeworld drivers from RPM Fusion has not resolved the vp9 issue for me. I’ve been tracking this bug: vaapi vp9 decoding glitches on rembrandt [Reproducer in comments] (#8044) · Issues · Mesa / mesa · GitLab. Disabling hardware acceleration for vp9 or setting amd_iommu=off are workarounds, but the root cause is with the VCN firmware file. There is a test fix that seems to work, but it has only been posted for rembrandt chips unfortunately.

The issue seems to be triggered with a firmware option that is only exercised by the Linux driver.

issue is related to parsing vp9 uncompressed header in FW, and this is currently the Linux ONLY feature

As far as I can tell from modinfo amdgpu there’s no way to disable that without source changes but posting here in case more knowledgeable people know otherwise.
