[TRACKING] FW12 cracking issue

Yeah, want to know if Batch 6 has a similar issue. (e.g. whether it’s [early] batch related or still shipped with this issue. A control unit, use as-is / as intended.) Leave the ‘why’ / ‘how’ to Framework, because at the forum level, all we’re doing really is speculation and providing data points.

Support hasn’t yet reached out to get the process started of replacing my machine. They did say they were very busy and asked for patience, so that’s fine. But in the meantime, another crack has started in the right rear, around the screw in the corner. It’s quite short at the moment (the first crack has gotten quite a lot longer, as cracks tend to do), but it’s more obvious than the front crack was when it first started.

Neither crack is currently affecting my use of the machine or the feeling of rigidity. But I do have two now.

Same here - in regards to current support status. No meaningful change concerning crack.

They made a decision about a replacement cower for me a bit more than two weeks ago. Yet as they updated me since, they are very busy, and only expect the part in the second half of august.

It looks like they got absolutely swamped with the extra support requests and required spares this is causing.

Sounds not so good….

Today marks day 23 of trouble shooting my flickering display.
I’ve asked a few times and Framework hasn’t even given me a “We don’t know.” in response to the cracking and hinge problems. They just ignore me and give me more display troubleshooting steps that don’t help.

Good thing I can still use my machine, it has been really useful in spite of the issues. It’s my new favorite device by far.

Batch 6, just received it this morning.

I don’t think these are cracks, seems like just a deformation in the mold, really hard to tell unless you are actively looking for something.

Will keep monitoring. After I assembled it, I tried to look again for the marks and I struggled, they are THAT faint, at least for now.

I do not think you would even be able to find those on a darker case color.

I have a new Bottom Cover Kit on its way and a return label to send back my cracked black bottom cover.

The order for the replacement Bottom Cover Kit was added to my account at the same time support communicated that I would be getting a replacement bottom cover. This was 2 days ago.

The replacement bottom cover tracking says it is coming from taiwan.

They probably didn’t expect to be needing replacement parts so soon.

I wonder if that means they’re confident they no longer need to be getting the whole unit back to inspect bc they’ve isolated the problem.

Then why would they want the cracked cover back?

idk. Maybe they’ve eliminated the rest of the hardware as contributing to the stresses and now just want to examine either the molded part or the properties of the plastic by batch.

Only replacing my bottom cover also made me think they probably don’t need to inspect the entire unit.

Mine only had the cracks by the expansion slots, so there may be different replacements for folks that had cracks by the screws or on the top cover.

Support also noted “When you receive the new Bottom Cover, please open the packaging carefully as it can be easily damaged during the unboxing process”.

They are likely insured against third party manufacturing defect by way of some sort of manufacturing liability insurance and a requirement to recoup may simply be to have a returned defective part.

If it is a design issue they likely have to eat it, but to me it sounds like a manufacturing issue, and thus likely covered by insurance.

I’s also likely that they in general want defective parts back, so customers don’t get the idea to e.g. keep using the blemished back cover and just sell the new one. Or worse, pretend to have a defect, to receive free parts.

Or test the defective units and find out the causes

Why not just return it?

I like it.
