[TRACKING] FW12 cracking issue

Which batch were you in?

My framework 12 arrived 4 days ago, and I got all the parts and everything assembled yesterday.

I will keep an eye on the common crack points to see if I notice any changes– I’m using the device regularly for school. I’m hoping that they’ve been able to make some changes for this batch or that not all devices are affected. My device doesn’t seem to have any of the other issues I’ve seen reported here, like the trackpad being misaligned or the input cover not disabling in tablet mode.

So far loving this device, this issue breaks my heart!

Actually, that makes me wonder what batches are experiencing this issue; I wonder if we could make a poll for it?

As the frequency of new posts in this thread went down a lot, it seems as the first few batches are affected most

That looks about right… I still want a poll, though. :smiling_face_with_horns: Wonder if I could do it myself here…

  • Batch 0 Cracked
  • Batch 0 Uncracked
  • Batch 1 Cracked
  • Batch 1 Uncracked
  • Batch 2 Cracked
  • Batch 2 Uncracked
  • Batch 3 Cracked
  • Batch 3 Uncracked
  • Batch 4 Cracked
  • Batch 4 Uncracked
  • Batch 5 Cracked
  • Batch 5 Uncracked
  • Batch 6 Cracked
  • Batch 6 Uncracked

Whoopee! It worked! :joy_cat:

As most cracks came along the time, it could still change

Didn’t it take around 4 weeks or so?

I’m batch 9. The next batch. Are you saying there are no more batches affected by this issue?

Not entirely; I stopped at Batch 6 as I don’t think the others have had time for cracks to develop…

OK. Thanks you. So mine could have the problem. I’m having a pre built one. So that might make a difference.

Unfortunately so, yes!

The replacement unit arrived on Wednesday and it looks good so far. I’ll keep checking for cracks daily, I’m having my hopes up.

I clicked accidentally on batch 4, wanted to know if the poll worked
I dont have my laptop yet. I was actually in batch 2 but moved up to batch 9 after changing my order.

When I googled this it came up with this: https://www.hao-en.com/data/images/201708/24/4znri5.pdf

This has 15% of some sort of mineral filling. Maybe this effects the cracking a lot. But I am no materials engineer.

Might make more sense to track the color and dates on what I assume are the bottom cover quality control labels.

All the bottom covers I’ve seen have a sticker with a date between the battery and where the SSD sits on the mainboard.

My black batch1 original bottom cover had a date of 2025.04.16

The replacement black bottom cover I received had a date of 2025.04.14

I looked back at the LTT video with Nirav’s bubble gum FW12 and the date looks maybe like 2024.11.something. The LTT shortcircuit FW12 review had a production sage unit with 2025.04.25 date.

The bottom cover in the framework guides is a levender unit with a date of 2025.01.15

There are slight differences in the bottom covers, so there seems to have been at least some design iteration between the preproduction units shown early on and the production units with dates starting in April.

Would be interesting to see if any further iterations have happened since production runs started.

It might. It seems like many of the people with cracks had the DIY model. It’s possible that the prebuilt models are less likely to have the issue, or maybe people with the DIY model are just more likely to post about the issues here.

Ah, right; I’d completely forgotten about that that poll…

Anybody got any useful information on their findings yet?

I hate to say, but my replacement unit shows signs of upcoming cracking again. Have it for two or three weeks now but hardly used it, as I’m currently not traveling and use my desktop at home. This time on both sides - which is worse than on one side with the first unit.

Currently the crack lines are in the bulging stage. Once the cracks are visible I’ll open another ticket.

How is yours @Nathan_Alan_Hansen ?

Edit: Decided to open the ticket. Maybe they have more insights now.

Edit2: Scrolled all the way up to my post about my replacement unit. Received it 14 days ago - if anybody else was wondering
