[TRACKING] FW12 cracking issue

Sorry I didnt see this earlier as Ive been OOO. You can transfer whatever stickers you like. The stickers on the original purchases are tied to new machines (SN, etc) so theres no way we can print a sticker showing your original purchase info on a replacement cover. That would be a logistical nightmare, I’d wager.

There’s nothing on them that is normally required for travel (like batteries may require compliance stickers if inspected, but not casings). If you run into trouble traveling with the replacement case / chassis / cover, reach out and we will help get it sorted. To our knowledge this has never happened, nor is it information that customs enforcement / travel security uses / can access.

Hope this helps!

Oh. That is something that did not even cross my mind. Just saw case stickers and did not even check the battery itself. Next time I open the machine I’ll check CE marking / stickers on the battery itself. Still more convenient to have them on the replacement cover so it does not have to be opened if inspected.

I agree that it’s not common. Regulation is in place for air travel in Europe, but they are more worried about cheap Chinese power banks - not laptops. Personally have never experienced or seen anything, but am overly cautious since it would be a stupid detail to trip over, if it can be mitigated that easily.

I noticed yesterday that my bottom cover has developed stress lines around the expansion cards again. This one is stamped for April of last year. So I guess I’ll be opening another ticket in a week or so when they open into cracks.

Never mind, it’s already cracked.

Would like to add mine to the gallery. One in the bottom-cover and a small one on the top-cover.

edit: created my first support-ticket…

The sad, not very exclusive club.

If Framework makes a metal chassis for the 12 I will absolutely upgrade to it.
Top cover cracks haven’t been addressed and I don’t think they will be based on what I’ve read, even though they still seem to happen pretty often.

At this point I just want a metal case.

Following up to report that swapping the bottom cover did fix the audio issues for both myself and another user in the initial audio issue thread: Speaker failure when getting warm

Before replacement my speaker situation was: the left speaker never worked, and the right speaker only worked when the battery was not being charged (unplugged, or plugged in but fully charged, basically when the charger wasn’t causing heat expansion)

Since swapping the bottom cover my audio problems are fully resolved, both speakers work regardless of the charging state of the machine. Super happy to have it working again, and I didn’t realize how much I was missing the extra volume!

Not sure if it’s just placebo effect, but the machine does feel a bit stiffer with the new bottom cover, at least when picking it up and carrying it around.

Glad it’s working well for you now!

Here’s my date stamps on the inside of my 12.
I’m actually not even sure when it was manufactured because the arrow seems to be pointing between the 10 and the 11. It’s not just me right?

Also just noticed the sticker says 10 on it. But I’m not sure if that’s relevant.
Arrow seems to be pointing more at 10 than 11 in my opinion but its crowded and could technically be either.

From what I understand from previous conversations with Eagle the stamps are pretty useless (in terms of main info we are interested in) and are just indicating the molds that are used. Also stickers inside. AFAIK it’s all about the sticker on the outside of the packaging box. Which is fine normally, but a bit of a pain in the current situation.

Seems as if my bottom- and top-cover will be replaced.

They did precisely this to me too, in Lavender. I told them I wasn’t even going to bother installing it. A couple months later they sent me something new (although I did not verify the week in the serial number, which I will be doing if the issue recurs).

With the greatest of respect, I will believe that if and when I see it.

The shift in your position across the length of this thread says quite a lot all by itself.

Where are you, Nirav?

Regrettably, Directives don’t directly apply in and of themselves; each Member State has to transpose them into their own law, so you get a patchwork of similar coverage which is not quite the same in each country.

Regulations, on the other hand, directly apply from the get-go without any such need for transposition. One such example is Regulation 2016/679, aka the GDPR.

So, you’ll need to see which of your local laws implements it. A good starting point is here.

Are you having trouble or is there something I can help with?

Not sure what’s happening here.

For what it’s worth - knocking on wood plastic? - my latest bottom cover replacement is holding up so far.

Gray model, did the swap on May 15. Don’t use it hardly at all since I almost exclusively use it for traveling. Did have one international flight and journey for a few days where I had it in a backpack with me for a few days. Used it only for a few minutes here and there and some general software / system updates at home.

So far it looks promising. Followed Eagles advice to be careful with tightening the screws. Packaging sticker was from week 10/2026 which according to Eagle is the real indicator.

Mold numbers are really misleading for our specific case. AFAIK they indicate the date when the molds themselves were manufactured and have no connection to actual cover manufacturing date or material. Curiously there was another sticker with another date (pre week 50/2025) inside the replacement cover which also had nothing to do with the bottom cover manufacturing date. If I understand correctly only the packaging sticker is the only source of truth. Not ideal in our situation but over time - once hopefully most covers are replaced in the future - it won’t matter any more anyway.

PS: Reason why I’m cautiously optimistic already is that previous replacements developed cracks on their own. Without any notebook use at all just laying around at home. Really soon after unboxing (don’t remember the exact time span, but if I’m not mistaken within days or a week or two).
